Let's See Your Volkswagen!

I've always referred to Volkswagens as "the Gateway Drug" to P-cars . I know there are some of you that have owned VWs in the past as well as those who still have them. Stock or modified, air or water, whatever. I want to see them!

I happen to be a VW guy. Used to have a '72 Super Beetle that was done up in the "German-Look" style. My Dad tought me most everything I know about cars using that little Bug; bodywork, welding, oil changes, brakes, etc etc. Bought it for $200 when I was 16 and just sold it last year to make room for the ultimate Father/Son project which is out '80 SC track car. The Super Beetle went to a great home in NJ and it actually took 2nd in Super Beetle Modified at the Fall '06 VW Show and Go in Englishtown, NJ. Not bad considering it needed a new coat of paint and some other stuff.

Since December of '03 I've been running around in a '00 New Beetle 1.8T. Of course, it's not stock Eibach & Bilstein suspension, GIAC software, 2.5" exhaust, etc etc. It is an automatic and I do get teased by my friends about it, but even that is modified. That box was built up after I killed it at a PCA DE day at Pocono. It's been heat treated, has a modified valve body and TC, external cooler, and a set of Raxles. Should be good for 400+hp (and I aim to find out!)

Here's a pic of the old Bug:

and a shot of the New Beetle:

Me @ LRP

So, let's see your V-Dub

The Jetta is mostly being used by my wife now; when I have it it's usually like this:

Z-Man: your wife has good taste in cars. She must be an awfully nice lady to let you stretch the car's legs. I saw a couple of pics of the Bug at VIR. Nice

thrown_hammer: those Bajas look badass I'm loving the sharkmouth treatment on the '61

Here is the 1979 convertible at the first alpine 500

incredible how similar the dimensions of a 914 and super beetle are. It has front disc brakes and topline springs(progressive lowering springs, tapered in the middle to give clearance for 914 wheel backspacing. Handles fantastic, even with the skinny tires on it now.

I really want to get a bus camper

VWs are awesome. Take the old Beetle for example. What other car in history could be a drag racer, off road race car, on road race car, cool cruiser, family car, street rod, etc, and be very successful at all of them?

It's funny, but since owning a 911, I've really grown to appreciate VWs. Before, I didn't pay them much attention.

I had Porsches before VWs. I kind of devolved.

I am the same way, but the other way around. I never appreciated 911's until I had a bug...

The VW Beetle is, beyond question, the best-designed automobile in history. It changed a little in the roughly fifty years of its production, but not much. Worldwide sales of the VW Beetle were probably four times the second-place candidate.

Everyone who drives a Beetle, regardless of how expensive their regular car is, exclaims "Wow. This thing is fun to drive!"

Super Beetles do hancle very well. I had Topline MaXX struts on my car (first set on the east coast). Couple that with the wide wheels, 7/8" FSB and sticky Nittos it was simply amazing in the handling department.

If I had kept mine it would have had a Type 4 swap and more brake upgrades, among other things.

Now you make me want a 914

Little roller skates they are. Put some decent power into one of those and scare the hell out of unsuspecting 911 owners on track days!
