Anyone seen Sophie Scholl, The Final Days?

http://www.sophieschollmovie.com/

I stumbled upon this one on cable last night and it was one of the most moving films I've ever seen. Only hokey part was that it's almost all in Munich and no one speaks with a Bavarian accent (in German, but English subtitles). Talk about a real hero. Check this one out. The show trial scene was just unreal and some of you Third Reich buffs will recognize how dead on the guy was who played the judge, Roland Freisler, was. Execution scene was very moving too. Go rent this one!

Funny, we just rented and watched it last weekend. The interrogation scenes were pretty compelling.

I was familiar with the basic history of the The White Rose, but this really fleshed out the details.

Not on the same level as Bruno Ganz in Downfall , IMO, but a pretty good snapshot of that same time.

Hans and Sophie Scholl, and Chrisopher Probst, 1942:

Saw "Downfall" recently too. Also very moving. The guy who played Hitler had his Austrian twang to a tee. I'm still not sure I buy Traudl Junge's "who me?" vibe, but no one else had such an up close look at Hitler toward the end. So we have to go on her account. Before her it was Albert Speer.

I thought the dialogue in the interrogation of Scholl was awesome. She was sharp as a nail and gave it right back to everyone.

Yes. Excellent film. Ditto for 'Downfall'.

Ok, if you guys are really into German films, check out "Goodbye Lenin". Too hard to descibe it all here, but about as well done as the other mentioned here, funny, sad, true, has all the right ingredients and was a huge hit in Germany. If you ever spent any time in East Germany before the Wall fell, you'll really appreciate it.

Rick,

Speaking of the former DDR, have you seen the recently released The Lives of Others?

Supposed to be outstanding, but we haven't had the the chance to see it.

I just finished reading the New Yorker's review of it moments ago. It's on my list. Having personally dealt with the Stasi, this will be a good one for me.

Ditched work for a few hours on Tues. while the boss was away and saw this movie. EXCELLENT!!!!! They told it like it really was. Stasi was very accurately portrayed here. Only flaw was, again, almost no one spoke the regional dialect for East Berlin. If you see this, the guy who explained the typewriter fonts on the easel spoke the real East German dialect, which is quite unmistakeable from hoch Deutsch.

Just put Sophie on my Flix list. Cannot wait...

Have to laugh about your comment on the East German language. If you have been around it you can really pick up an "eastie" after their first or second word they say. My last time to Berlin I stayed in a hotel that was about 20 meters over the "mauer" and you could really pick it up.

Will take a generation for it to change and mingle with the rest of the country.

Joe, prepare yourself. I couldn't stop thinking about this one for a few days after I saw it - definitely the mark of a good movie. The end is extremely moving. I can't imagine going to the guillotine with such dignity and she was just a kid when she did it.

Rick,

Many of these people knew it was coming, they just did not know when or where. Some escaped while most did not. As you well know, Germans are not weak so not surprised at the ending.

Joe

Brilliant film. The Director, Florian von Donnersmarck, is someone who has a huge future. If I could buy shares in the guy I would.
