Anyone gotten a HD DVD Player

I know the war isn't over, but I really like the picture of the HD DVD.

The prices of the top of the line Toshiba has dropped about $400 in the last month.

I picked up the Toshiba XA2 today, and hooked it into my 70" TV. The picture is stunning.

Anyone else using one yet?

Michael

Not yet, but I am tempted to pick up the LG dual HD/Bluray when the price drops. Still retailing for $1,200.00.

Enjoy the view.

My new computer has a built in HD DVD drive. I'll be picking up a 1080p LCD TV shortly and will hook it up.

I have viewed HD movies on my computer monitor and the picture is VERY impressive. Even on the relatively small computer monitor, the difference to regular DVD is substantial.

I've owned a Toshiba XA1 HD DVD player for about 5 months now. Not all that impressed with it. Picture quality is good, but still not as impressive as HD on comcast cable. Load-up on the player is terribly slow..takes close to two minutes from power-up to play.

I read a review somewhere and the problems far more outweigh the benefits of using the Xbox as a routine player.

Here is one I found:

CNET editors' review
Very good
7.5
out of 10The good: The Xbox 360 HD DVD player is less than half of the price of today's stand-alone HD DVD players and includes the Xbox 360 Universal remote. We also appreciated that the player's disc-load times were half those of Toshiba's current HD DVD players, and its two rear USB slots that let you connect USB peripherals.

The bad: Since the Xbox 360 currently doesn't offer HDMI connectivity, there's no way to output your HD DVDs via HDMI for optimal video and audio quality. Currently, there's no 1080p output via component video.

The bottom line: While it doesn't offer HDMI connectivity, the Xbox 360 HD DVD player matches up well against stand-alone HD DVD players, and it's a relative bargain at $200.

No 1080p to me is a problem if that is the ultimate goal you should be after.

Give it a year or two and all the dvd's will be this format and you won't be stuck with a hugely overpriced obsolete dvd player. I picked up a 1080p converting player on my Sony SXRD and the quality is so good I really can't see it getting much sharper. I think they are going for $80?

I'm not finding that. ~$600 is the lowest I've found. Could ya post where ya found the Toshiba XA2 for ~$400 ?

The price has dropped $400, not to $400. If you want a $400 player, might check out the A20 from Toshiba.

Isn't HD DVD going to be the Betamax in this format contest?

I heard Microsoft is working on a component video to HDMI converter.

I have an older HD TV that only has component video inputs. Just sent for an OPPO DV-970HD Up-Converting Universal DVD Player for $150.

No,

That is Blu Ray, as HD DVD got porn. Porn was what put Beta out of business.
