Anyone Recommend a General Contractor in Western NC?

The thread about the recent Dragon run in WNC reminded me that some of you live near my hometown of Asheville.
I own a small cottage there that needs repairs/remodel. I hired a local GC who gutted it for me and a began the repair work...but then decided to just keep the rest of my money and do some more lucrative work. I am looking for someone that is a bit more honest that will still charge reasonable prices. It is tough doing this long distance and really need someone I can trust. I guess a good referral would be the best way to approach this. Anyone?

I'm in Hendersonville. Send me some pics and I'll contact the guy who built my house. He does new work, but probably knows rehab people. I built the house I'm in now while living in Indiana, and was impressed by this guys integrity.

Thanks, but I don't have any photos right now. Maybe a description would help. The house is in West Asheville. It is a small house built in the 20s, less than 1000sq ft, 2 small bedrooms, one bath (apartment sized). Nice half-acre lot though. It is currently vacant and has been for quite a while. I need a GC only because there is a little bit of everything that need done....but is reall not much more work than finishing a basement. It has be demoed down to the studs inside. All windows have been replaced (although I understand one is broken now), the hardwood floors have been sanded and the outside is in good shape (siding) I want to rplace the exterior doors (3) and the interior bedroom doors.. The kitchen and single bath have also been removed down to the studs. The wiring is updated but will need a litttle electrical and plumbing for the kitchen and bath. I also want to replace the current propane waterheater with an electric one and put in a heat pump in place of the current oil forced air heat system. I want to put insulation in between the studs and then drywall. I also need a new railing and steps for the back deck. I really don't want anything fancy done (Lowes quality), and could certainly do it by myself in a few weeks if I could get back there...but I use up every vacation day with AF Reserve duty.

Thank you! I appreciate it. I really want to get it done because the last contractor left it uninhabitable and it is starting to be vandalized since it is vacant. I bought it several years ago from a close relative and really don't want to sell the home for sentimental reasons. My first contractor said to leave it as a dump and just rent it out because with the housing shortage, it would rent anyways. I do not fancy myself a slumlord, but a vacant house is not a good idea either. There is a lot of substandard housing in Asheville, so I would like to fix up so that it would be a nice, but inexpensive rental for a young family since those are currently in very short supply there. Make me a good guy and still brings in a bit of coin. Maybe when I retire I might want to convert it to a vacation home or something.

If you know anyone who is looking for that sort of GC type work (certainly not high end like some of the guys post here) or even a plumber or electrician that you could recommend that will take on some small jobs...it would be helpful. My email is fintstone@aol.com

I know you do the production type stuff, but If you need something to mess around with yourself (to help fund your P-Car parts) while in between other work...I would be happy to talk to you about doing all or a portion of it. It is just off the west end of Patton Ave., near the Lowes.

If I have one more person who bought a late night TV course on "buying real estate with no money down" look me up in the tax records and write or call me about buying it or donating it to them...I'll scream.
