Thinking about buying a Unimog - anyone here have one?

I realize this is probably off topic but then how technical are 90% of the threads on this technical forum?

Anyway, i'm thinking about buyiong a Unimog. Has anyone on here either got one or owned one? Gas or Diesel? How drivable are they? What kind of mileage can I expect?

If you search in the off-topic section there was recently a long thread about Unimogs. :)

We have a member called unimog. PM him.

tonythetarga 04-06-2007 07:17 AM

Try emailing vonsmog@yahoo.com

He is located in Western, NY and does frame off restorations and is always in the buy/sell market. If he doesn't have one he is well connected around Canada and the US for leads.

Decent guy to deal with.

I'm a Unimog dealer...you can p.m. me if you'd like more info on new ones. We once had a guy call from L.I. who wanted to buy one for personal use.....he wanted to be able to get to Atlantic City when his helicopter or H1 couldn't !!.

I have a 406 as well, but have owned a 411. I thought the 411 would be more ideal because it is smaller, and i thought more maneuverable. it is not. the steering is incredibley heavy, the brakes are junk, and it has NO power. the 406 is much more satisfactory. the turning circle is incredible, just incredible. it has a 3 way dump, and great ground clearance, the brakes will stand it up on the nose if you want, and it has a pneumatic diff lock. it is truly one hell of an off road machine, we use it for just about everything. the one suggestion I have is something that i didn't realize until I bought one, but has made all the difference in the world. that is to buy a convertible. the convertible makes it easy to get in and out, but much more importantly, it makes it so much QUIETER. a convertible is the make or break, and it makes it. I have owned many dump trucks in the past, but this is the only truly satisfactory one, and it is incredible. i have no regrets.

Wow - a Unimog crew cab!:D

My Dad was talking about getting a truck, I bet he didn't have one of these in mind. Maybe I could talk him into it...

unimog406 - what is a 411?

I thought the 406 was the smallest of the diesels? How does the 406 compare to a 416?

I appreciate the input on the convertable. I was leaning the other way until I read your post. I wanted an enclosed cab for our winters up here.

What is the max speed on your 406? Was your 406 a Case unit? Do 406's come this highway gears?

Check out the maximog. Pretty cool 007 add-ons!
