Move to Michigan ... Get an iPod.
Michigan has officially turned into the Bizzaro World. We've had the worst economy in the USA for several years. We have a 1 billion+ $$ deficit, companies are picking up and moving out as fast as they can, real estate values are down, blah, blah, blah. Our dumb blond Governess and her crack legislature are apparently unaware of any of this. A budget proposal yesterday included a plan to give away an iPod to every school age child in the State.   According to a radio interview this morning, the genius behind this plan believes we need to modernize the state. Learning from books doesn't work in today's day and age - it's 18th century technology ......
We've also had proposals for a new service tax, raised income tax, a 9 cent per gallon gas tax increase and a junk-food tax! Even the best writers at Saturday Night Live couldn't come up with this sort of material. http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2007704060333 |
The health of Michigan is tied to the health, or lack of in the auto industry.
Im glad I sold my house and moved from there back in 2002. an editorial on this topic http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2007704060333&imw=Y |
Who is John Galt?

I'm in a bad mood today so maybe this is too harsh, but Michigan is fukced. We're droppin' like flies up here in mfg. and it's no mystery why. If I were in another state I cannot think of a single reason to re-locate in Michigan.
I'm not a defeatist or pessimistic in nature at all. If anything my optimism has cost me/us, but I can see now that this state is done, stick a fork in it. And our dip**** governor is most/only concerned with replacing revenue to the treasury..... can you hear the screaming in my head? I need a drink. |
So a free iPod for all the kids isn't doing much for your business Len?
The only reason I'm still here is my business tends to thrive on bad economic times. Otherwise, I'd been gone long ago! When we've got politicians making serious proposals like free iPods .... we're dealing with people so far out of touch with reality that there really is little hope of a turnaround. |
Would the schools put pod casts on these for learning purposes? Will there be any locks? I could see some benefit to this idea if handled well. A spec built ipod probably costs less than a couple of text books, not that I recommend replacing books. But some of the teaching materials are pretty damned useless and costly.
BTW, what business thrives on bad times besides a bar? We might need some of that here, soon. |
I use my video iPod every day. I can't imagine trying to read electronic text books off that tiny screen!!! If they want to save money, stop buying new text books every year. That's a racket in itself with kickbacks from the publishers for replacing perfectly good books every year.
A major part of my business is insurance fraud investigation. There's always a lot of fraud, but the last 2-3 years have been record-setting here. So all you Michiganders, PLEASE help my Porsche fund by submitting a fraudulent claim (or 2) to your insurance company! |
That sounds like interesting work. I'm sure we have a bit of fraud here in CA ;) What I meant by pod casts was audio.

I left Michigan over 25 years ago and have not looked back even once. My family still lives there so I've been there a few times over those years, but thankfully, it's been as a visitor. :D Randy |
I would leave MI, but we wouldn't be able to sell the house and we'd have to give it away. They don't call this place "Michisippi" for nothing!
|
Down here in Arizona we are getting at least one TV commercial a day about "Michigan is wonderful, move your company or business here and prosper."
They forget to talk about the Gov or the winters... |

If you ever decide to leave Michigan, there is always room for you here in Georgia. Heck, I'll even show you a couple of "tricks" for driving through Atlanta traffic...a bargain at any price! :D Randy |
Wow, I had no idea our pathetic gov. was advertising out of state. I would be interested to hear the sales pitch. Seriously though, what a joke. Instead of actually making Michigan a good place to do business, we'll just pretend....
Glad I had a drink.... or two.... or a dozen.... |

I'd recommend Illinois, but our governor is desperately trying to turn us into the next Michigan.

Edit: No, not really. I was quoting a book. Sorry for the confusion. |
Atlas Shrugged, one of my all-time favorite books! That book led me to my current Libertarian stance on most issues...

Thanks!

Thanks, but if we go anywhere, it will have to be St. Augustine, FL! I'm hoping we can ride this rough storm out here in Michisippi, but if we have to, we'll leave. My wife has a good teaching job at the same school our kids attend, our home has been recently renovated (you know all about that!) and I found a good job, so we're staying put for now. My wife's parents could use our help as they're not in the best of health and since my wife took care of my grandfather for 5 years, I feel like it's only fair to stay and take care of her parents. Oh well.... |
Left when I was 18 and never looked back!!!!
|
They were going to lay off 29 state troopers but the union kicked in 400k to keep them on through July. 29 troopers in the entire effin state and even that small of a cut just cannot be allowed. What is that less than one half a trooper per county? No doubt they will get a budget approved to keep them by July...what a friggen joke.
Government just flat refuses to adjust to income. To add: I don't know about you guys, but when pondering all the problems Michigan has I have found myself coming back to the same answer every time.... The highways need more patrolin' Do you have any idea what 1 officer costs the state over their lifetime? |
Just saw a TV commercial for Michigan.
Kinda odd, it was specifically targeting "life sciences" companies and inviting them to move their businesses to Michigan. No mention of a free iPod for them. |

You can't lead with something like that, always be building to a climax. |
The weather in MI is the big draw! Where else can you enjoy the "change of seasons" all in one day?! It was 70 degrees last weekend and it's in the 20's this weekend. Lovely... then when it gets warm, the mosquitos come out!
|
sounds like some of NY State Government's crack consultants have a new client on their list of suckers!!
|
I'm moving to Detroit! Yahoo shows over 900 homes listed for under $20k, Vernors on tap, and now free iPods?
Sounds like paradise! |
Howard,
And the roads are worse than Iraqi roads... an additional bonus, you get a new suspension and exhaust system every year or so... |
900 homes at $20K?? That's the upscale stuff. There's 127 houses under $10,000. For a million bucks or so, you could be the real estate king of Detroit! :D

No no no. This is not important. Before we can worry about that stuff we need to figure out how to replace the lost revenue to the governor. Priorities guys... priorities.
