Rapid City

also thinking about going to RPD. Would this be a decent vacation with family? What all is in the area?

Mount Rushmore of course, also the huge monument being built of Crazy Horse, but it won't be done for years. Not an awful lot else there based on my brief visit a month ago. Unfortunately, you won't be able to get this picture, not open to the public!

Colder than hell part of the time, then the rest of the year not much to see up there.

Would concentrate elsewhere IMHO...

Joe you are a bit off on the weather in the Rapid City area. My wife is from Watertown in the eastern part of the state so we get out to SD often. The western part of the state including Rapid City is really quite beautiful. The winters are not all that severe compared to eastern SD and you can avoid the hot summer temps by going up in elevation. Lots of neat towns to see, hiking camping, staying in cabins up in the mountains. Kinda like Colorado, but not as much elevation.

Check out the Firehouse Brewery downtown, they have some good food and the family will like it. The Radisson is a nice hotel right up the street where the crews stay.
