What to see in Vegas?

I'm going to Vegas next week...never been before...not a big gambling fan but might go look and see.

Don't want to be a "tourist" but what should I see if I had one evening to do it?

Is that exotic car museum worth seeing? IIRC it's not free....?

The car collection in the Imperial palace is free if you are a member of AAA, or if you find someone hawking coupons along the strip. An interesting collection.
The exotic collection in Caesars forum shops is a pay-to-enter "showroom" not really worth it. There is also a Ferrari dealership in the Wynn.
If not gambling--what else to see depends upon what you like. Tons of options for shows--everything from stand-ups to magic to topless old style reviews, impersonators, musicals, etc. etc..Get your tickets on-line prior to going. Depending upon when youa re going--there may be a big-name sporting event(boxing match, UFC fight, rodeo, etc.)
If you want touristy stuff-watch the volcano in front of the mriage, the sirens show in front of TI, the bellagio fountains, the animals in the "secret garden" at the Mirage--all pretty ho-hum but free. Or head downtown to fremont street for the fremont street experience.
If you want amusement -park thrills go to the Stratosphere--which was the tallest structure in Vegas untill Trump tower 1 was started--they have rides located in the open-air at the TOP of the tower.
You can fire full-auto weapons at the Gun Store--off of Tropicana.
It all depends upon wether youa re looking for high-energy or low-key. Vegas has a bit of everything.

Fun trip is to take the helicopter tour into the Grand Canyon. Not cheap - about $400 IIRC - and it only goes in at the beginning of the canyon for a short way but it is still very impressive. You fly over Hoover Dam and over the strip when you return. It lands in the Grand Canyon on Native American land [they sell the landing rights to the helicopter companies] and you can get out a walk around.

We had dinner at the Excalibur Tournament of the Kings. I thought it was fun.

Hoover Dam was cool too.

Steve, go hang with Jordi. And bring your helmet and rent a 1200GS from the BMW dealership. Call and ask for Troy. Then ride out to Valley of Fire and Lake Meade. Worth every penny. BTW, I think the Ferrari dealership in the Wynn charges $10 to even come inside unless you are a FOA member. But they have a 599 there you can see very well from the window.

If you like sports, a trip to the ESPN Sportzone in NYNY is worthwhile - I remember a Sunday I spent in a huge recliner watching 12 gigantic screens all at once. If they would have given me a blanket I would have taken a nap.

Great shows: Cirque, Penn & Teller...

Food has become outstanding - especially at the Bellagio.

Just walking up and down the strip and in and out of the various properties is a good afternoon.

You guys have big plans :) I'm getting in Monday afternoon and will be hanging with our software partner on Tuesday. Leaving Wednesday. Going to the big Oracle User's Conference to present something. Big exciting! I doubt I'll have a ton of time to play, but thanks for the suggestions.

IF you are into Shelby cobras you can go get a tour of the csx factory. Last time I was there they had some original 427 cobras, etc. I liked it a lot, and found it very interesting. The place is right next to the las vegas race track, not too hard to find. As an added bonus there were some people practicing NASCAR racing at the track that I snuck in and caught a couple laps of.

rhjames 04-09-2007 11:59 AM

too much to see in one visit---race track, car museums, shows, shows, and more shows, G-Canyon, Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, shows, shows, and more shows, Pahrump (if your into aliens), [Area 51, Tonapah test range, Groome lake--if your into not being able to see anything]---I can't really say anything about this---shows, shows, and more shows......

OH *****!!!! THEY'RE AT THE FRONT DOOR!http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/ar15.gif

Stay an extra day, check out hoover dam via bike.

MBAtarga 04-09-2007 05:06 PM

I was there 2 weeks ago. We saw CDS - Mystere show, Blue Man Group, and Penn & Teller. Blue Man Group was hilarious and I'd recommend it highly. Took a side trip to Hoover dam too - took lots of those dam pictures!
