$4K for a rebuilt Honda Transmission?? Holy Smokes!!!

Hi all,

I have an '02 Honda Odyssey. Tranny has been missing b/w 2 and 3....been a real pain. Been pretty rough overall lately.

Brought it in, and apparently when they went to tear in down...it basically fell apart, according tothe shop. It's in pieces now.

Anyhow, it's "cheaper" to get a remanufactured unit from Honda than it is to totally rebuild. The unit is approx. $2100 USED....is that nuts? After labor, and extra b.s. and even a "discount" it will come to $3600 before tax. Price for the unit seems to be fairly accurate after some research.

i called Honda N.A., and they want to look at the tranny. Even though it's out of warranty, they may assist since the car only has 58K miles. Wow....I'm sooooo pissed. A tranny rebuild and a new Sachs Power clutch for my '85 targa was only 2500....seems cheap now.

Any input is appreciated.

Just venting.

Unfortunately is not all that uncommon. Honda automatics aren't perfect. Most likely you can call around and beat that used price. But, as they are in demand, they arent cheap.

I've never seen a Honda transmission fail -- that's really remarkable. My Dad's put two new engines in his Accord but still has the original transmission. Wow.

And when I did the full rebuild of my '86 type-915 transmission, the total came to about $1500. John Walker would have done it in a tenth the time for only about $1000 in labor. Aargh.

Honda doesn't make their own automatics anymore...they started phasing out their own automatics starting in 2001 for ones from Borg Warner or ZF like most other makers. Too bad...real Honda automatics are extremely durable.

They use sliding gears (like a manual tranny) rather than the planetary gears in other automatics. I've always like the feel of Honda automatics as they shift very crisply and don't feel like your power is going through some slushbox.

Some more info on Honda automatics:

Honda and Toyota have really let their guard down in the past few years reliability-wise.

Yet they capture the 2 top spots on the Consumer Reports survey. Never owned an example of either one. I can't drive an Asian car, it's not in my blood. At those prices, I know I never will. Rebuilt tranny for My GM truck is $1500-1800. The earlier ones are even less.

Randy,

Thanks a million for that link. I see here that Honda has covered the replacement cost recently on another similar issue. THANK YOU! Hopefully I have some luck with this issue. Having the car towed to the dealer tomorrow.

Thank you,

My '91 Accord has 230,000 miles on an auto box with no problems (knock on wood) but on the other hand my 00 Jag S-type just lost top gear on Sunday. Only 71k miles on it, dammit.

Looking at $1700 to replace the box in my car, labor included. I would check around on pricing unless Honda NA is going to help.

On my 2nd tranny and it's starting to slip after 1000 miles. Ody transmissions are weak and "rebuilt" ones seem to be weaker. I know another owner on their 4th tranny, this is wrong.

I smell zero hundas in my future.

Isn't that what Wayne got? He might be interested in this.

Probably cheaper to just chuck the car and get another one for $4k.

3rd Gen Odysseys have a different transmission. So far so good. This is the 3rd model year with the new tranny's and I haven't heard of many complaints.

my dad had a 2001 Accord. Went through THREE auto transmissions.

The service techs at the dealership told my dad and I to my face that they didnt need or reccommend changing the transmission filter.
