Anyone else have a kid come home crying because of the Webkinz rumor???

OK, I'm not the greatest fan of the idea of a virtual pet, but at least I don't have to clean up after it. But apparently either out of pure meaness, or maybe an April Fools joke gone bad, but now there's an urban myth flying through elementry schools about webkinz heads getting chopped off at the clinic, or Miss Birdie offing your favorite pet. http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/cut.gif

I just had both daughters on my lap wailing about how their virtual pets were going to have their heads cut off and they'd never be able to get them back. Of course, it's heightened by the age group that tends to be very literal, and not able to clearly differentiate between the real world and the virtual world. Unfortunately, that particular moment wasn't the right time to have a heart-to-heart about urban myths, hackers and the ability of software engineers to fix programs -- I even had their mom (a SW-Engineer BTW) try to explain the computer facts of life to them.

But, it's nothing that a few minutes of free TV for distraction couldn't fix.

So -- Anyone else have the same experience recently???

Thanks for the heads up. Kids are off from school this week so I can nip this in the bud beforehand.

Life was easier when I was a kid and we had "Pet Rocks" or later on the "Cabbage Patch Kids".

My daughter (8) has been on it for over a year now, at least. She has quite the set up for her little pet, and the site has been great for all this time. But, I guess after a certain time frame she now has a notice for the past week pop up on the site saying she will have to renew her access to the webkinz. In other words go out and have mom and dad buy you a new webkinz pony to get a new password and start all over again. Just thought you all should know! The end is near, I think this Thursday, boy I can't wait.........http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/kao5.gif

I think our Kids webkinz would die of neglect and not malice!

Buying a new one NOW and adding it will keep her current setup renewed for another year.

Plush dolls that need periodic software updates to stay alive?

I'm having one of those "why didn't I think of that" moments. :(

From what I heard the Beanie Babies guys passed on this one.

They can't keep them on the shelves around here. We have at least 3 stores that sell them in a 1 mile radius and they are always out of stock.

we had real animals when i grew up. but this looks like another reason todays kids are spoiled and overweight.

get them off the computer and outside where they can get some fresh air and exercise. they should learn life lessons that really have responsibility.

support your local animal shelter and adopt a real needy animal that will give back unconditional love. you will also save a real life, not one that will expire when your year is up and they want more of your well earned money.

Sorry no more additional real life pets for awhile. Have 4 rescues in the house now and it's my 7 yr old daughters responsibility to feed all of them.

Yeah I'd prefer them to be outside but the weather in NY sucks right now.

It's been cold and wet. Rather them inside till the weather clears. Although it was nice enough yesterday so it was off to the park for the afternoon.

But I get where you are coming from and agree with you 100%

good for her.:)

wish i could pull the cold an wet card on my Aussie. but here in Seattle he prefers lousy weather. usually easier to just to take him to the park and just get us both wet.

my parents are on their second Aussie rescue and wouldn't have it any other way :D
