opinions on Pearl Jam? the band.
i was in college during pearl jam.
i never tied a flannel shirt around my waist, but i did listen to the music. i love when old music (old is relative) stops me and makes me just listen. i was just watching that Christain Bale movie..out of the furnace. it is the song at the closing credits. Release by pearl jam. damn..i stopped what i was doing, sipped coffee, and just listened. i forgot how that band changed the landscape of music. Pearl Jam put out some amazing music.

Check out Mother Love Bone. Members of that band became Pearl Jam. Now, THAT was a band.

I love a bunch of their songs... however the singing is an acquired taste.

I love most of their songs, but there are a few that well...just suck. This one is a more recent favorite.

Were friends with Mike McCready and his wife Ashley. Absolutely great people. Were going to see them in Cincinnati in the fall.

Love 'em. Was streaming them all day via Spotify just the other day. Of course, I'll still listen to Ratt, Dokken, and a plethora of 80's and 90's bands :--)

All that music happened during my junior and senior years in college and I was never into it. I had to play a lot of it with my band, as that's what was popular then. But I think that was a sad era for guitar. It was great for drums, but sad for guitar.

Mind you I can get into the technical stuff... I am/was a huge Yes fan, and did the whole Joe Satriani thing plus old school Alvin lee and Eric Clapton etc. (Toss in Joe Pass and Andres Segovia for good measure). For me this type of music is more about being minimalist. More is not always better, especially in art and music.

Like the band.
Eddie can be hit or miss for me. Sometimes I like his voice, other times not.

I think the last great "guitar god" (in the classic sense) is probably Slash. IMHO John Frusciante is a ridiculously gifted player. Jack White is certainly doing what he can to bring back the classic rock n roll guitar slinger. Big Jerry Cantrell fan. Wish Tom Morello would rely less on effects. John Mayer is an awesome player when you look past his pop stuff. Joe Bonamassa. The list is endless but the days of the Eric's, Jimmy's, Jeff's, Eddie's, Stevie's seems to be MIA.

I was bar hopping with a friend around Pioneer Square back in 1990 right after I got out of the military. My buddy ran into an old friend from high school that was a drummer in a band playing at The Off Ramp. He said he'd leave our names at the door so we could get in free. The band was Pearl Jam, it was a great show, he even gave us Mookie Blaylock T-shirts.
We hung out with him after the show & went to his house. I remember his girlfriend freaking out when she saw my buddy's pistol sticking out his pants when he sat down. She was Nazi storm trooper that I believe was largely responsible for Dave's departure from the band. I've seen them a couple times since, but not since the 90s. They lost me after Vitalogy. I saw a lot of bands in the 90s, I remember going to the OK Hotel to see this grunge wanna be band from Cali named STP, I was very skeptical, but it was only $2. Turned out they blew my socks off, great show. I wish I could have seen Mother Love Bone, probably my favorite grunge music along with Gruntruck.

If you've not seen the Twenty documentary, set aside a bottle of wine and 2 hours.

I think Jerry Cantrell was the best guitarist to come out of that genre. Frusciante is AWESOME too, but the RHCP were around long before grunge took off. It's not that I expect every guitarist to shred, but the guys from those bands just seemed like they didn't practice enough as kids. Worse, they influenced a lot of other kids to not aim high in their playing. The drumming from that era, however, was great. Dave Abruzzese, Matt Cameron, Chad Gracey, even Dave Grohl - excellent drummers. Oh, and the best drummer of that era, hands down, was Aaron Comess of the Spin Doctors. He's ridiculous.
