Watch the original HK movie "Infernal Affairs" that Departed is based on; much, much better than the US version.

I thought both were great (they were nearly the same... scene for scene)... but it seems that the US adaptation ran into trouble when trying to end the movie in a way that was more palatable for Western audiences.

I much prefer the Hong Kong version to be honest. Much better ending. Btw, if you watch the Hong Kong DVD, you get to see an alternate ending in the Special Features section the director made for the China market, where the good guys win (similar to the US version in a way).

He is/was the father of the baby she's carrying. Unless, of course, one thinks that maybe it was Costigan's ?

This is my favorite movie from 2006. Period. I absolutely LOVE it! I have no desire to see the HK version, the American one is it for me!

Wayne, I agree with you in the scene you just described. I liked the movie, but the credibility gaps were there or confusing.

Chalk this up to the audience not suspending enough disbelief.

"Certainly if the tape was given to police, he would have been arrested immediately, "

Perhaps Scorcese wanted to introduce this quandry because this could be a case of Dr.-client confidentiality (I haven't had a chance to see the HK version). Bad cop would have been arrested right away, but the mob connection might have been a little intimidating to her. Look at me. I'm apologizing for Scorcese.

OTOH, I enjoy watching LA Confidential numerous times, another good cop, bad cop film. I thought the story line was pretty tight except Bud took a lot of lead and lived, maybe just compensation for getting Basinger.

Wayne,
I suspect you were watching this on DVD. How do I know this? Because you have young kids and I remember my wife and I seldom went out to watch adult-themed movies when our kids were that age.

In your home theater, there's more opportunity to stop playback and discuss the inconsistencies with your 2 year old compared to being a part of the theater experience. If I said "WTF" numerous times in a crowded theater, besides the elbow jabs from the spouse, I'd get my large popcorn tub, cheese nachos, Milk Duds and 44 oz. soda confiscated by the rude folks loudly conversing in the seats behind us. In this environment, there are no time outs. When the next plot hole appears, the last one fades to black.

I thought there were numerous problems in the plot of this movie--and it was boooring as all get out. Definately a "mercy Oscar" for Martin.

I guess the female shrink is the only available single woman in all of Boston-- she just happens to be romantically involved with the antagonist and protagonist of the film--and WTH is her problem--she is all lovey-dovey with Damon's character, but hold the phone-- he won't let her hang up photographs in their new place, so go sleep with someone else--makes sense!

All hype--no substance.

Okay, another problem with the storyline. So, Jack Nicholson's character knew that the Police were all over the warehouse when they were buying the microchips. Why show up at all? That move made no sense whatsoever, and would only happen in Hollywood. I don't get that one in particular.

Ironically, at the end of the movie, he was most concerned with the tail leading them to his deal, but he didn't care previously? Very inconsistent.

Little things like this ruin the movie for me.

I took this part to just be a symptom of Jack's growing dementia. He was getting so addicted to the money and the power, he couldn't stop himself, even though as he said, he didn't need it. He knew they were close but he just kept going because he could.

Nope, no one smart enough to do that? Instead they rush over there to "find out" which one of their guys is missing from their pack at that time? Duh? Does this not make any sense whatsoever either? Who do they think the rat is? Maybe it's the guy who's not in the van with them?

Well presented movie, but stupid plot holes like these really ruin it for me.

You are apparently not properly suspending your disbelief....

My wife and I just watched it last night on DVD.

Not that this is important, but Colin didn't kill Costigan - the other inside guy from Costello's crew capped him when the lift opened.

Was Madolyn crying at the funeral because she thought Colin killed Costello, or just because she had been involved with Costello - OR because she was carrying Costello's baby?

The things that bothered us are this:
What's in the yellow envelope?
Why did Dignam cap Colin?
