Is anyone else totally disconnected?
My neighbor knocked on my door this evening and asked me if I could reprogram her sprinkler system. I said sure and strolled over to take a look, she is a single mom and was nervouse about massing with the timer.
I asked he what she needed it to do and she was suprised I did not know. It seems with the drought down here we have been put on a restriction of watering every Tues and Thurs. I set her timer and went home to tell my wife. We are so disconnected. I never watch the news, I do not listen to testicular radio anymore do not visit news websites and I am rarely on forums anymore. I know there was a shooting in Va and a lot of people were killed. That is the extent of it. I had no clue we were on water restrictions and probably would have gotten a letter or fine if it was not for my neighbor. On a side note: I am kind of pissed my lawn will probably die now. I live on a sand ridge and the ground perculates fast, I water every night between 2-4 a.m. and my ground near the roots is dry by 9 a.m. Going from watering 7 days to 2 will kill the lawn. I am going to drop it to every other day 1st and watch it if it does o.k. after a week I'll keep removing days until its down to 2. Back to the question. Anyone else totally disconnected? |
Sorry but my lawn is not real high on my list to worry about.
There are so many other things that are dying that are more important. |
My point was if it were nto for my neighbor coming over to ask me to reprogram her sprinklers I would have had no clue there was a restriction because I do not watch the news.
Try to follow along here. My lawn is not a priority. It was an example of how out of touch I can be sometimes with all the BS news out there. |
You need to get out more...
|
The smart (and sustainable) thing to do would be to say "screw the grass" and plant landscaping that's indigenous to the area and native/able to tolerate your conditions. This kooky notion that everyone needs to have an astro-turf green lawn regardless of where they live is simply idiotic, IMHO. It only contributes to the homogenization of America and the decay of regional identity.
Ditch the grass and put in some cool native stuff. :) |

I could not be happier and feel 100X better now that I am out from under flourescent lights and not breathing recycled air conditioned air anymore. I am actually researching some jobs online this evening and thought I would poke around PPOT a little. |

Maybe I will do that plan out a more natural xeriscape. |
Jim over the last month the national news has pushed me to becoming disconnected. First day after day of who was running for president in 2 years, then how much money they had collected and now 24/7 of the VT shootings. I just don't care anymore to listen to this pablum for the masses. On the other hand my yard is nice and green. :D

I don't watch the news either. The reason I don't watch the news is because these days it's all crap. It's all about sensationalism. They direct the news at idiots. It's insulting and disgusting and focuses on murder, rape, people being screwed. I know that crap happens, but I don't need the gory details.
Yeah, I'm generally pretty disconnected. |
I'm pretty connected to news that relates to the economy, markets, world events, etc. It's for the job. Sometimes I will see a news story and have this weird feeling of deja vu because I heard about it the previous day. It can feel like I live 1 day in the future. Here's for weird, I used to get up every night at midnight to read the next day's Wall Street Journal online.
But I have little idea what is going on locally. I kind of wish I knew but I'm too tired to absorb it, plus the local paper is so bad I can't stand to read it. As far as news sources, I don't watch TV news, unless something huge is going on, so don't think I've watched TV news since the invasion fo Iraq. There is some good TV news - BBC for example - but the signal to noise ratio is too low. I read WSJ, NY Times, sometimes Washington Post, Economist magazine, various internet sources (Google News is great, also some blogs), and the market-specific sources. |
Disconnected?
Most adults can't give you the name of the current vice president and many aren't sure how many states there are in the US. |
No radio in the '44, no watchy TV, no read no newspaper.
Just eat, sleep, family, school, Pelican. :) Speedy:) |

Our town will post signs during water restriction.
As for being disconnested? Wow, if I'm disconnected then my workmates and neighbors are completely out of touch and I don't do mainstream media save NPR. |

why not work around the problem : drink more beer and piss on yer lawn,
if the lawn doesn't grow better, at least you'll care less |
I'll hit up CNN.com during my normal morning web rounds,, but otherwise I'm completely disconnected save PPOT as well.
|
I am completely and utterly disconnected since I misplaced the remote.
I am also a TV digest deviant. Every week a magazine makes a list of the top 10 shows seen by most people. I have never watched any of them. Most of the shows are either some weird reality drama shows, play some kind of moronic game and win a trip to 'who cares' in company with the semi celebrity 'who gives a damn' or boring couch shows with old has-beens back slapping even older has-beens. I have a distinct feeling that a rising number of television programs are made with the soul purpose of making themselves famous. Everything is about oneself these days. Back to the lawn - I think Stijnīs got a point. Every action that creates the effect of 1+1=2.5 is worth contemplating. |
Jim,
I think I'm in a similar situation. I took down the TV antenna several years ago, the radio is on CBC for 3 minutes at 6:13 AM and I might listen to CBC radio if I'm in the car. I stopped the provincial daily newspaper a couple of years ago and get a weekly regional (Gotta find out what the neighbors are going to be up to). Other than that, if it wasn't for a couple of sites I hit, it's "out of sight, out of mind" and I sleep better. Les |

Jim,
I'm with you... don't need or want what passes for news now a days... books on tape (actually CD's) or Christian radio is all I listen to in the car. My TV is all PBS, Discovery channel, SpeedTV, ESPN, etc. If I could move to a tropical island with a good pile of books I could totally disconnect... but haven't won the lottery yet! |
Indeed. There are people who watch the news daily......and don't know how many states there are. Of course, we call these people "conservatives." Just kidding. sort of.
Really, I was kidding. sort of. I've been driving the 911 lately, which provides me with all the audio entertainment I need. There is no radio in that vehicle. I never, ever watch TV news, except in the morning to see the traffic ticker. Once a week, maybe, I will take the time to sit and eat lunch and when I do, I get a newspaper. So yeah, I'm disconnected. I'm less disconnected than I would be if I watched TV news each day. |
I am on the internet for 8+ hours a day. A complete and utter junkie.

Look who I met this morning in the field. He did not want us in the yard and no one was home but we needed to get this one done in 1 trip so we were going in the yard if he liked it or not.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...43/baddog1.jpg I was taking pics of house for client and shot this crappy short vid of him getting upset with me going in his yard. The first time I went over the fence (gate locked) he tried to bite me was I was coming over once I landed he took off running and kept his distance. I have gotten pretty good at reading dogs over the years, I have only met 3 in 10 years that would not let me in the yard. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21.../th_baddog.jpg |
Have a nice evening fellas I am off to my sons school for a parents workshop.
