GPS experts- questions
I want a handheld unit that does it all! I was riding my bike and figured it would work as a cycle computer. Then figured I can use it on my fishing boat, sail boat, as an in car lap timer at the track, and travels in the car. It would need to have topographic, lake, and road maps. It also needs to be water proof. Turn by turn voice prompts would be nice, but not essential. I'm hoping something exists out there that will cover all of that. Any ideas?

I just bought a Garmin 76CSx ($335) two weeks ago. It floats. Maps are sold separately along with a host of other accessories. I bought City Navigator Maps (US-Canada-Puerto Rico), 2gb micro memory, case, DC adapter. Probably got $500 into it or so without a car mount yet.
The 60CSx is same guts different body. Both use the latest, greatest, SirfIII receiving technology. For handheld, these two are pretty much the nutz. No voice, but it beeps for turns. Auto routing is great with any mapping software. Topo maps and water/lake maps are available at extra cost also. |
+1 on the garmin 60csx

For in-car use, get yourself an external antenna. These have magnetic bases so you can stick it on the roof of the car or somewhere on the dash when you're on the track. For more civilised driving, Garmin also sells a car-mount for most of their models.
I agree that the 60CSx is probably the most rugged, outdoor-oriented unit. If your need is not that extreme, Garmin makes many more units more suitable for in-car use. Stay away from most things non-Garmin. |
