daughter's first 911 ride
 

My wife let me take my daughter for her first ride in the 911 today. She just turned 1 a couple of weeks ago. She loves helping me in the garage, even more than my son sometimes. He's too busy playing with that "Thomas the Train" or "Lightning McQueen". Bah!!

Since our early cars don't have airbags, what's the earliest anyone has put their kid in their 911? In a rear facing seat that is. I haven't tried, but I am pretty sure our rear facing seat should fit in the front seat.

I put our son in a rear facing seat (in the backseat) at age 5 or 6 weeks. That meant the front passenger seat had to be all the way forward, though. Not really fit for safe riding for the front passenger, as their face would have been about 6 inches from the front windshield.

Looks real cool, but it was my understanding that children at that age is much more vulnerable at impact when facing forward. Their proportionally large, heavy head can´t be sustained with their relatively weak neck muscles. Different consensus and recommendations in USA ?

Interesting look at the setup, Markus. I certainly don't want anything to happen but the car seat has a harness that goes over the shoulders. With no airbag, this is the way that the local police suggested we do it. They went so far as to suggest NOT even taking the kids in the car.

At one and at least 20 lbs, children can face forward in Michigan. She meets both standards. Both kids now ride forward facing in the rear seats in our van.

Alright. I think maybe that Swedish authorities takes an over protective stance (as usual) on this issue. Here it is recommended that children is faced rear ward up to the age of 4.

Good job Wayne, I believe in letting kids experience life early, although when I married my wife and became an instant dad, my "new" daughters were 6 & 7, so I did not have to go thru the whole car seat thing. Granted I bypassed this stage, but having grown up just fine without car seats, these arguments over whether it is "safe" for kids to ride in certain cars and certain styles of car seats, just leaves me shaking my head wondering what has happened to this "land of the free".

Our PCA club is having the first drive of the season so I will be heading to that. I will get to Hershey one of these years. Having two youngins limits what we can do.


I, too stay pretty much around the neighborhood with my kids. We actually never even get over 55MPH on the roads we take.

It's true about Sweden and most of Europe and rear facing seats. My wife used to work in safety restraints at Ford, she would tell you a lot about this.

This is assuming an impact with a large acceleration coming from the front of a vehicle. I have had both of my 944's hit from the rear.('85 totaled, '86 repairable) The odds of an attentive Porsche driver hitting something forwards is not going to be very common.

I don't know the exact numbers, but something like 90% of fatal car accidents are single car events, 90% of those front impact, the other 10% roll overs or the car spining backwards out of control - would never happen in a Porsche.:rolleyes:

I'm sure Wayne was extra careful, others on the road maybe not as much. I'm just talking broad numbers and average risk factors.

I have been able to avoid every time so far frontal impacts, which I've had some very narrow escapes that required putting the car on its traction threshold. In the case of my '85 getting totaled, there was no evasive action I could of taken at all, none. I'm more concerned with getting rear ended than hitting something in front of me. I've had two cars hit in the back. My brother was hit by a drunk driver from the back(who was a hit and run). He mis estimated where his lane was while trying to slow for a red light(which he'd of never been able to stop for at his velocity), while concentrating on braking, he steered right into the back left of us.

The chances of a single car incident with your baby in the car are also not that high, you aren't going to take the same risks. Given the average driver, I'd agree with you, I know I'm not the average driver, and I don't drive an average car either.

Your kids are also her kids. You(meaning Mom and Dad) are both parents, you don't just do what ever you want to do, its BOTH of you together.

Very cool, seems like she was born just yesterday!!

In 1983, my daughter enjoyed her first car ride - home from the hospital facing rearward her car seat bolted into the back of the Karman Ghia. She was our little tale gunner.

Very nice. My daughter was in the cab in the front seat rear facing for a while. I loved it when random strangers would tell me that it was dangerous putting my child in the front when there were airbags. It always made me laugh.

Both my kids have ridden in the back seats of my air bag equipped 911 now.

My 4 year old loves going for rides in "Daddies fast red car". Of course she doesn't know how fast it really is since I drive like an alert grandma when they are with me.

Trust me, she would have me take both kids in the van if it meant she got break for more than an hour, which I do for her. She is a stay-at-home Mom so I try to be understanding of her needing a break. I have been asking for the last three months to take Sarah for a ride. This way, Daddy gets to enjoy the 911 and gain some points with Mommy at the same time!


(I know you were just joshing on me, Noah. Having been divorced once, I don't intend on doing that again. My wife and I discuss most everything that has to do with our lives. ) Hey , I still have my hot rod even after having kids. Many guys sold theirs off back in the day and I don't intend to be one of those.
