Beer Prices going up!!!

Higher Prices

Beer drinkers in Germany — and that's just about everybody — are upset at the prospect of higher beer prices because of less barley — which is being replaced in many fields by crops intended for use in biofuels. The French Press Agency reports the price of barley has doubled in the last year. The head of the German Millers Federation insists biofuels are monopolizing the land and says — "The German government has got to be reasonable and not give more importance to energy security than to food security."

Similar stories have been reported in other countries — such as Mexico — where riots have accompanied the soaring price of tortilla flour — because corn is being diverted to ethanol production.

It will all work itself out over time.

Governments will place top priority on fuel.
People will starve and die.
Less people = more fuel and food for those who are left.

No problem.

And lower demand means lower prices

Porsche-O-Phile 04-25-2007 10:09 AM

Dammit. I just bought shares in the energy sector. Maybe shoulda' bought 'em in the brewing sector!

Moneyguy1 04-25-2007 10:25 AM

How much more will my annual 12 pack cost me?

kach22i 04-25-2007 11:00 AM

PBS had a special on solar energy last night. Germany has a program, which is causing farmers to install panels on land they are not farming.

In one case you could see sheep grazing under the panels, which were set up on an elevated frame, allowing double use of the land.

The Germans have always paid a lot for power, but see long-term benefits in supplementing solar energy right now.

I guess my point is, are you willing to pay a little more for beer if one less terrorist state like Saudi Arabia has a few less of our dollars?

Porsche-O-Phile 04-25-2007 11:07 AM

I'll drink to that! :)

Yesterday, drinking a couple bottles of a friend's homebrew, we were discussing this very topic. It's simple economics - people are starting to gravitate toward microbrews for obvious reasons, and there is money to be made there.

Dunno about that... I have been into micro brews for about twenty years now and if you read micro brew magazines they say the market peaked about ten years ago. Yes, I know that every small town or neighborhood now has their own micro brewery (that's a good thing) but very few of them are going nationwide like Sierra Nevada.

Pretty much all I'll drink is micros now. I keep some Sam Adams around in the fridge (or Sierra Nevada, or whatever), but when I go out it's almost always to one of the local brewpubs.

Does this mean Scotch prices will go up now or in 10-15 years?

What happens at the pump with the price per barrel changes?

Grass don't grow well in the shade.

I guess I'm kinda the opposite. Usually, the places I go out, Sam Adams will be the only decent beer on tap. Usually in the fridge is Unibroue or Dogfishead or Thomas Hooker.

It will definitely go up in the next 10-15 years, but I think my private stock will easily keep me going that long. If it gets really desperate I am prepared to share with fellow Pelicans in exchange for Porsche parts.;)

I think they were more concerned about burning the grass from the angles of the panels.

There was lots of light under these panels, and FYI grass does not need direct sunlight to grow.
