BUYING THE WAR - PBS Bill Moyers special

FYI:

Preview: BUYING THE WAR
http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/blog/2007/04/preview_buying_the_war.html
Wednesday, April 25, 2007 at 9 PM on PBS (check local listings)
Quote:
How the administration marketed the war to the American people has been well covered, but critical questions remain: How and why did the press buy it, and what does it say about the role of journalists in helping the public sort out fact from propaganda?
A stroll dowm memory lane, some retrospective on the war.

Watch it, and discuss it later with the group.

Is SloPat asking you privately to take over where he left?

The subject of your postings seem to always have the same topic and slant...

That's pretty funny coming from the guy who broadcasts his slant in his banner.

Yeah, that's it, that's the ticket - let's all just put our opinions in our banners - that way we can spam our views without the bother of coming up with new material...

"Slant in my banner?"

We need to talk...

If you do not believe that the Illegal Immigrants are one of this countries biggest problems, then you have a problem.

If you do not believe that the American Soldier died protecting your freedom and your rights, then you are wearing blinders.

If you do not believe in God then you will have a much bigger problem when you die.

You call it spam, while the rest of us feel a bit differently. When its your time to talk to God, I hope that you have changed a bit or the conversation will be very short indeed...

Joe, I believe in all of the above and I also believe that this administration sold the war and used people like you and me shamelessly for its own purposes. So where does that put me?

MRM,

I am not defending the war, or like Kach going after it with every post.

Do not like the way its turned out either, but I feel very strongly that if everyone in charge of getting us in Iraq (and that includes Congress and Senate who voted for us to go there) had no idea that it would turn out the way it did.

Where it puts you is as an individual just like everyone else.

Joe, were not laughing at you because of your message. We're laughing at the fact that you are so quick to deride some people becuase most of their posts just say the same thing in different ways, while ALL of your posts say the SAME thing in the SAME way by virtue of your signature!

Do you not see the irony in that?

I do see that, but I do not bring up the things in your signature, but the things you guys post!

MRM brings up my signature and someone who questions God or our military, thats fighting words where I live.

Anyone wants to go after what I post, then have fun.

Joe: Luv ya as a fellow desert rat but let's be honest. You carry your core beliefs on your sleeve and get your dander up when others do. It is interesting to read posts and see who "loses it" first and who maintains their cool. Certain posters seem to distance themselves and respond in a cool dispassionate manner while others simply attack. The rest of us shake our heads and in our individual opinions, we know who came out on top.

No problem with being outspoken. Just be tolerant when others with strong opinions state theirs!!

Like you and like kach, I do not support the way things are going and I am convinced that we were sold a bill of goods by an admistration with an agenda and a press willing to go along with the hype. I will go further and see a leader who is stubborn, convinced that he knows better than anyone else and as the Commander in Chief (a civilian) says that civilians have no business interefering with the military. So...Who reports to who? An old adage: "War is far to serious a business to be left in the hands of the military". I do not believe that those opposed to the status quo are traitors and in fact have a duty to act as a "loyal opposition". I believe the president should sign the appropriation, even with the time constraints and fight out things later. To do otherwise is, in my opinion, incredibly short sighted and damn close to cutting ff his nose to spite his face. I believe the next year and a half will be the most contentious and damaging this country has gone through since Nixon and Watergate/Vietnam.

Bob,

Do not disagree. You commented on my posts and such and not the items contained in my signature. Large difference IMHO...

Anyhoo....

This really is nothing new. If you think about it, the media has always "marketed" wars.

interesting politics in action is the newspaper and hard info accounts 6 months before the war.

even the business mags discussed the costs.

The lead up concerning Turkey allowing 40,000 US troops to close the back door is wild and US military responses as they swayed back and forth till the last moment.

much of today's so called info is neutered by selective memory.

and ot on ot is that whom ever wins the Presidency will become the next war President.

Bill Moyers has been peddling his own nicely minced “objectivity” for 30 years. But behind his pseudo-professorialism is a committed Leftist, PBS’s resident, rather watered-down version of Noam Chomsky. Like Chomsky, he issues uncontested nonsense from a protected perch, in his case the PBS “documentary.” Like Chomsky, he asserts the media is actually conservative. And like Chomsky, he glibly strings together self-serving and supposedly “well-known” assumptions into an “argument” of convenience which he never permits to be deconstructed in the give and take of inconvenient debate. Chomsky has used the same technique for 40 years; he can’t utter a paragraph free of phrases such as “of course, that’s common knowledge,” and “as we all know,” as he quickly moves to his ideological “logical” conclusion.

Moyers is also a liar. In a recent Rolling Stone interview he made a series of personal attacks – on record -- which in a subsequent interview with Jesse Walter of Fox News he denied making. He was given ample chance to recant his lies, but would not. What’s interesting when watching the interview is to see how stunned Moyers is that he’s actually being challenged.

Also, this PBS series is embroiled in scandal. Martyn Burke, one of the filmmakers hired by PBS to produce a documentary on Islamic culture, is accusing them of not only attempting to influence the political content of his work during production, but of censoring it. Indeed, Burke's film, “Islam vs. Islamist,” which documents the effort by radical Islamicists to intimidate moderate Muslims, has been removed from the PBS program.

This is Burke in a recent interview with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

“One of the absolutely growing elements of hysteria from WETA within PBS was that we have a point of view. We said, “Of course we have a point of view.” Our point of view -- based on the research, based on the reporting and the discussions with all these world-class reporters that we had engaged on this topic -- was that there is a large community of moderates within the Muslim world who are afraid to speak up and we’re showing why. It’s because of the attacks of the Islamists. What PBS/WETA attacked us on was they wanted us, in our opinion, to become virtually apologists for the Islamists, those who are the fundamentalists in this world.”

Burke is an author and Hollywood filmmaker with no record of political affiliation with either liberals or conservatives.

You make a good sheep, they counted on that. Now you look away from the truth?

We must be free of the lies which got us into this mess if we are to stand any chance of getting out.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste, open your eyes, hearts and minds.

Watch the PBS program, you might learn something or at least get a better perspective on recent history.

rrpjr, who is this Jesse Walter of Fox News? I can find no record of this person.

How so? Is there anything inaccurate about what I said?

Think about it...leadups to:

Vietnam
Korea
WWII
WWI

Ever read old newspapers? See those old newsreels they'd have just before a movie at the theater?

Just curious, what specifically is inaccurate about what I said which indicates I'm a "sheep?" What is not truthful about my statement?
