For the record, I'm American, brought up in England, married to an Italian and living in Italy. I saw this in London last week and thought I'd post it here. Isn't it amazing how things can look different according to which side of the fence one finds oneself on? |
Benedict Arnold was a hero until he felt he wasn't getting his due. IIRC he regularly whipped the crap out his opponents.
I read a book about him many moons ago, but I think that was how the book laid it out for me. Micah |
If he had not sold out the plans to West Point, and stayed in Colonies, he would today be remembered with Washington, Jefferson, Lafayette, Franklin, John Adams, Patrick Henry, etc. Instead, his name is a synonym with a traitor.
He stopped the British in the battle of Saratoga, about 20 miles North of Albany, NY. It was one of the first, best, defeats of the Bristish in the war, and destroyed the strategy of conquering the colonies by isolating New England from New York by controlling the Hudson river. |
