Nuisance Cardinal – help!

   I have this Cardinal that for the last week has been basically running into my bedroom window and its KILLING me and my wife. I assume it thinks its another bird but you would think it would get a clue. What do you think its deal is and what can I do to make it stop??? I try to scare it away and it just keeps coming back!!!

THere's one where I work that's been running into car windows for over 2 years. It's the most bizarre thing I've ever seen.

It started by running into my truck window but migrated to the side of the house - bizarre indeed!!

.177 air rifle. With a good scope. Neighbors will be none the wiser.

But just in case you are a bad shot and want to save the window, get a fake snake and hook it up to the window sill, I did this in Costa Rica and NEVER had another problem with the birds. I had some very good reflective glass on the windows facing the sun and everymorning as the sun came up some little yellow birds with black feathers would land there. The male thought the reflection was another male and went nuts. The female just turned her butt to the glass and spread her feathers.
The fake snake works.

If its a regular Cardinal just send him back to the nearest Catholic church but if its one of these guys things could become a bit more tricky! Your not a heretic are you?

Nobody expects the Spanish inquisition!

HardDrive 04-29-2007 01:23 PM

Well, I didn't think this was going to be some kind of Spanish inquisition!

I used one of those wooden ones that wiggles around, the birds just see it as a snake shape and don't like it.

Try a decal of the face of a hawk or eagle.

We had one of these when we lived in Atlanta. It kept running into our storm door. It was so focused on the reflection it didn't notice when I opened the door slightly, reached under the door to grab him. I tossed him into a box and drove five miles away and released him.

I was bummed when I was driving down the street and realized the little sucker had beaten me home! He was right back at it! Next time I took him around ten miles away and never saw him again.

Silly as it sounds, this works...we had the same problem with a Stellar (blue) Jay here...Cindy traced a hawk outline from a book in black felt tip...placed it in the window, no more problem...showing the raptor hooked beak outline seemed to be the key. So, a dummy snake should work as well.

The reflection is another cardinal and this bird is protecting his turf. If you can figure a way to block the refection you may have some success.
