If you get the Bronco, get a roll bar.
Why? Will the roof fold readily in a roll over?

Trucks with short wheel bases are great for off roading. On the other hand, they make really bad tugs. Especially for 4,000 lb boats.
Yup...I bought my short wheel base Dodge for hunting and hauling, not towing. Only thing I ever towed was a 700 pound sailing dinghy...
Short wheel base sure turns around on a logging road easier though...:)

I'd suggest a full sized long wheelbase pickup for boat towing...if rollovers concern you, there should be aftermarket bed mount roll bars available.

Where do I buy a roll bar that's compatible with using the rear seat and a soft top / hard top?

Look in the yellow pages for an off road specialty shop...they make roll bars for practically any 4X4...

They did make a diesel Scout. They also made them in longer wheelbases.

Yup, the Travelall and Terra. Even harder to find parts for now. Of course for what it's costing me to rebuild my SC engine and gear box I could restore a Scout two times over.

The Scout was also available as a 4 cylinder. It is half the V8 - literally. That will be fuel efficient but a bit anemic to pull 4000 pounds. A friend has the Traveler, a 78 model, IIRC. Nice truck.

If you go with an International, buy a restored example. Much more cost effective than doing it yourself. The Bronco is cheaper to fix up but of course the same applies there ...
