Depending on what type of sod you're installing, you may want to spray the soil with Image before you lay it. Should get rid of the remainder of your crabgrass and provide for a beautiful, weed/crabgrass-free lawn for quite a while.

What color is your crabgrass? If it's green, I'd just mow it along with the rest.

Mike,
What you're calling Crabgrass is undoubtedly Common Bermuda grass (as opposed to hybrid Bermuda which a different animal). It is VERY hard to get rid of because the roots of well established common bermuda goes FEET below the surface, not inches.

Realistically only a systemic herbicide will get rid of it and then it isn't a "for certain" proposition. Interestingly if it isn't all that well established, sod MAY act as a light barrier and MAY kill it. Personally, I would bet it will come up through your sod at some point in the future. You can then spray it with a strong systemic herbicide but of course that will kill the sod locally around where you sprayed. Best of luck with this. Personally, I have St. Augustine with some common Bermuda mixed in and the St. AUgustin battles it as well as almost anything, but if your heart is set on a true blade grass, you've got some long term maintenance coming up.

Your best bet is that the sod will deprive it of enough light to come back...maybe. I'd suggest you watch around the edges (where light is more likely to rwach the remainig crabgrass) like a hawk! Be ready to shoot that ***** with Roundup at a moments notice. Best of luck. With the heat coming on? Crabgrass, Bermuda, St. Augustine - all the heat loving grasses are about to shift into hyper drive growth-wise.

Do not put roundup down if you plan to sod in a few days. Nuke, wait a few weeks, months....

Upon further reading, if you can't get the neighbors to do so....
It's going to be in your yard eventually.

Do you have a commercial lawn service? The kind that runs their 250 lb machines over your sprinkler heads?

There's a great product I've been using for years called Turflon ester that will keep the crabgrass and bermuda and weeds out of your fescue lawn. Just spray about 2 or 3 times a year, that's all it takes. Downside is that it isn't cheap but a few ounces goes a long way (they say as little as a pint an acre but I use a little more than that).
A Google search will provide more info than you want or need.

I use the same stuff Sammy just mentioned on my Marathon II(fescue) front yard. It's best to use these treatments when the weeds are in their peak spawning/growing season which is coming to an end soon. So don't delay for best results.

The irrigation guy isn't worth a damn, I'd ask for a refund. Good call on the collars.

How far is the drop off your yard? Looks like 4-6 ft at that intersection. Wrought iron fence would look nice and might save an injury later.

I was thinking something that wouldn't block the view, but maybe you want more privacy. White vinyl picket fence?

People only hate crab grass because it’s called crab grass. They wouldn’t mind it if it were called something cute, like “elf grass.”
