Do you know why I stopped you?

I was thinking about some of the classic responses to that unwelcome inquiry after a traffic stop.

One of my favorites;

Officer: "Do you know why I stopped you?"

Driver: "You smelled the donuts?"

What are your favorites?

Officer: Do you know why I stopped you?

Driver: Okay, I'll play your stupid-a$$ game...why did you stop me?

Cop: "Do you know why I stopped you?"
Dude: "uhhhhh. no."
Cop: "Well, I clocked you at 73 in a 55 back there."
Dude: "Oh *****. Thank Goodness. I thought it was for the pot for a minute."

Do you have any idea why I stopped you?

Well, it could be for any one of a number of things......

A police officer pulls a man over for speeding. As the officer approaches the car he can see that the man is very anxious about something.
"Good afternoon Sir. Do you know why I stopped you?"
"Yes, officer... I know I was speeding--but it is a matter of life or death."
"Oh, really? How's that?"
"There's a naked woman waiting for me at home."
"I don't see how that is a matter of life or death."
"If I don't get home before my wife does, I'm a dead man."

I got stopped several times 35 years ago in the DB4 when I was in the USMC in North Carolina, the cops saw a young kid driving it and assumed I was a drug dealer or it was stolen. One time that I got stopped (I wasn't really speeding much) and the cop says "Son, you were going about as fast as you could in that thing weren't ya?". And I said, "Sir, if I was going as fast as I could, we wouldn't be having this conversation right now".

Funny you should ask.. On Tuesday I took the 911 out for a little cruise to inspect some of the larger projects in my territory, so.. after getting some discount Indian gas(.30 discount-no tax), I was heading for the barn after a successful tour, everything looked good, sunny day, feeling mellow. The trooper was sitting on a bridge over the Xway, in a car without the lightbar, didn't notice him until I was under him!
He comes blasting down the ramp and is on me in seconds. He asks me" Do you know why I stopped you" so I says "no, not really Trooper". He says "My laser showed you at 78 in a 65 at a distance of 865', sir" So I tried to blame my just rebuilt speedometer, but he doesn't buy it. Crap! So he gave me the ticket, and I took it to the family attorney to fight it.
Here's my question: would a Valentine One alerted me in time to slow to 72 or so?

Gogar 05-06-2007 03:02 PM

Why do you think that 72 would help? If he wants to, he will.

red-beard 05-06-2007 03:11 PM

78 in a 65, he must have been having slow day...

p911dad 05-06-2007 03:42 PM

The "limit" around here seems to be somewhere around 75, I certainly found the upper limit. We never hear of tickets on rural xways under 75. I was actually really surprised to get one at 78, as the traffic was moving near that speed and I just happened to get choosen-yeah, maybe he was bored, that is a lonely stretch of road for sure(I86 west of the I390 split)

Do you know why I pulled you over?

Yes. Do you know why I ran the stop sign? As the officer stands in the rain.

unimog406 05-06-2007 05:37 PM

LEO: do you know why i stopped you?
me: I thought YOU were supposed to know that

URY914 05-06-2007 05:38 PM

I didn't pull over, *********. I ran out of gas.

Veeeery unlikely. You're unlikely to get enough warning with ANY laser detector. I'd think (based on research) that your only good option is a laser jammer. The Blinder Xtreme is a laser detector and jammer. It has the detector to let you know the first time you get hit. You then slow down and turn off your jammer and they get a good reading.

The best response is nothing. "Do you know why I stopped you?"
Say zilch. Smile, hand over registration, license, and proof of insurance. Oterwise say nothing.

What ever you say WILL be used against you in a court of law...should you decide to contest the ticket.
