Class F target shooting
 

Yes I own a gun...GASP!!!!

Does anyone shoot class F target? Thats long range, ie 500 and 1000 yards. What gun do you use, what caliber?

Is 0.308 better than 6.5 x240? Or are they nearly the same?

What do you think of Savages new class F rifle, the Savage 12 F target rifle? Both calibers. 30" ss barrel, target trigger, single shot.

After market or company barrels? Triggers?

I don't shoot long range target, but when you mention 6.5, I have some Swedish Mauser's (6.5x55) and a Norwegian Krag/Jorgensen in the same caliber that are "tack drivers" at huge distances, I would like to get a Swedish sniper rifle (from Samco arms) to round out my 6.5 Swede collection. Winchester also made a model 70 in the same caliber.

If you are shooting long range, bullet weight is your friend if there is ANY wind. The old tried and true 30.06 is very hard to beat, but the 7mm, 270, 300 win mag are all very nice as well. A 30.06 would be better than a .308 round IMHO.

If you are shooting in a secure, windless area the smaller faster calibers are nice to play with but if there gets any wind at all they are not as stable as something a bit larger. 6.5mm is fine as long as the shooter understands their limitations but there is a reason why the long range guys usually use a 30 cal of some flavour.

Longer range? Remember the old time shooters used the 45/70 all the way up to 45/100 rifles with very good success. Just need to know how to work with them and a 500 grain bullet is not going to be moved around much by wind.

7mm and 0.270 are substandard at long range for competition shooting, make sure whatever chambering you choose has a good selection of bullets available for it, you are going to want to hand load your ammunition for this task. At long ranges the 6mmBR is still the best all around cartridge out there. And be warned to be competitive get ready to spend a lot of money on a rifle based on either a heavily modified sleeved Remington 700 short action or one of the various custom actions such as Farley, Stiller, BAT machine, RPA, etc.

have shot long range for quite sometime now. throw away everything but the following:

.300 win mag
.308
30.06
.50cal

if you want to be competitive and not have yer a$$ handed to you, you got to spend the bucks. dont listen to ANYBODY about out of the box accuracy. its all bullcrap. buy 10 rifles from different mfgs. or same mfg. and get 10 different groupings.

remember 1/2 moa is a joke in bonifide long range sniper circles. with correct ammo/correct gun/and YOU(which is the BIGGEST VARIABLE) will be able to take "X" out all day long, dependant on weather conditions/temp/humidity/wind etc. over and over and over. not just some "luck shot".

since the brilliant military planners NOW HAVE DECIDED its a good idea for each squad to have a counter sniper-sniper, getting a rifle built for yourself due to mfgs. backlogs, is an act of god just about.

i have won quite a few bets taking "X" out!

its kinda like riding a bike, once you learn you dont ferget!

learn yer "come-ups"! learn them, live them, know them like back of hand. paste them on rifle stock and ONLY BUY quality optics w/tall turrets. not the cap style that you need dime to change them. unless of course you want game to run away.

next palma match get 4 guys and do it. 4 man teams. target puller/marker,score guy, spotter,shooter.

wait til you go in the pit and have 50 guys unload hi-power rifles on you and you have to mark targets. you'll know exactly what a fire fight is all about!

.50 cals now banned at ben avery because rounds impacting over mtn onto federal detention center!!!!!!

Four five one...Rigby, Alexander Henry and Whitworth Percussion Rifles..The 44/100 and 45/100 caliber Sharps all are 1000 yard Match Rifles.

308 is aliitle light for 1000 yards..better 300 Win Mag. Nothing really beats the old 06s though it is such a versatile cartridge.

Nesika Actions..holds the Worlds record for Long Range accuracy.

The 6.5 Swede is a flat shooting round, that has sectional density that penetrates well.

It all depends what U want....M1 NM Garand, Springfield NM and International Match Rifles on the 03, Swede Sniper, Knights SR25 on the AR10 platform, AO Neidner on Mauser and Springfield actions and K31 Schmidt Rubens all work well.

For New..Nesika, Ed Brown both make Custom BA rifles.

Krieger or Shilen Barrels. Hand Lapped...

McMillian Stocks...

Personally 308 or 06 is fine with me, as I don't want to beat myself up with recoil. 300 to 500 yards is good enough for me.

It would also be a good idea if you did your own handloading, as U can find out what make your rifle perform at its best.

Currently I'm having Don Brown build a Gibbs LR Target Rifle in 451 for me. It should be ready in September. Whats really funny is that the Brits come to him for their rifles, as he is the only one building custom stuff in that style. The choich is an Italian Pedersoli Gibbs...

-Good for you, buy another one.

-I do not shoot target matches at that range, but I do shoot regularly at targets that are at the ranges you mention.

-Remington PSS, in .308 with some excellent glass on the top.

-I don't think there is a "better" that you can measure here. You can look at ballistics tables all day, but fundamentally you want a rifle that you can shoot well, as shooter error is going to trump ballistics pretty much every time, at least with rounds that are so similar. As mentioned, heavier bullets are more resistant to drift from windage.

-Savage makes fine rifles, good bedding, pretty good triggers, and inexpensive. Try it out, fine tune your technique, then you can look at some of the other stuff that reaches out there and touches someone, like an Accuracy International.

Word of advice, don't skimp on optics. Leupold Mark 4 FF would be a good start.
