Harry Potter: 1, God: 0

OK, the subject line is just bait… Get over it…

In a lawsuit in GA, it was determined that Harry Potter can stay in the school libraries. But that’s not the point. The point is this lady, Laura Malory, who argued the case. Her argument is based on the separation of church and state:

Quote:
Mallory argued in part that witchcraft is a religion practiced by some people and, therefore, the books should be banned because reading them in school violates the constitutional separation of church and state.
But apparently the separation of church and state does not apply to her church:

Quote:
"I have a dream that God will be welcomed back in our schools again," Mallory said. "I think we need him."
What’s up with that? Why does her god get to be in schools and some other god does not?

(Of course, Harry Potter is a not god nor are the books anything but fantasy (and therefore do NOT violate the separation of chuch and state), but that’s not the point. The point is the double standard that Malory has towards her particular god.)

that's because Harry Potter is fiction, but God is real.

"Now I am wicher than the Queen!"

Any guesses what movie that came from?

You know the answer, Kang.

Her god is the right god, of course!

Best,

But the separation of church and state applies to all gods, fictional or otherwise (and so far all gods that I am aware of fall in the “fictional” category...).

Have any of you guys read a Harry Potter book? To my recollection, there's no mention anywhere of God. There is a dark lord, sort of on level with Darth Vader, but no God, and no religion. It's just sorcery, witchcraft, cult stuff.

And we all know how cool cults are.

I think the whole 'separation of church and state' has gone a little too far.

Having a book about Christianity, or heck, even the Bible, on a shelf in the school library does not violate the 'separation'. FORCING students to read it, or FORCING them to pray, yeah, that's a violation.

Good guess. Right genre. It's from Monty Python's Yellowbeard. One of the bad guys trying to find the treasure before Yellowbeard the pirate and his son (our hero) Dan could retreive it was obsessed with being richer than the queen. He did get a hold of the treasure for a short time (hense the "Now I am wicher than the queen") but our hero Dan wins out in the end. So many great non sequiters in that movie to quote from, if you'll excuse the preposition.
