Pole Chain Saw - Gas Powered.
 

I'm thinking of getting one and was wondering if anyone
can recommend a good one. Need a fifteen - twenty foot reach.

Stihl makes probably one of the best chain saws on the planet and their pole saws are also exceptional.

why not go all out and get one of these?

The Stihl unit is far and away the best I've used.

I have here a Ryobi which was lent to me by a friend. I believe it to be 10'. I tried using it and it did absolutely zero. Upon further inspection I realized he had installed the chain backwards (no wonder he lent it to me, lol). I flipped the chain and this things cuts very, very well.

I believe he purchased at Costco for around $100.

+3 on the Stihl...I even use it to section branches on the ground because I like the safety aspect.

15-20 ft reach? I hope you are built like the governor of CA. The Stihl and Echo models reach out to 12.X', I believe, and I do not believe I could handle more reach.

I have been very happy with my Stihl pole saw. I don't know if the the 4-stroke engines on the new models are good. Price is up there.

I like the poulon that has the weedeater, pole saw, edger and clutivator attackments...

Northern tool and under $200. Cuts branches too - I think 12ft is about all I would feel comfortable with...

If price is a concern (Stihl's are great but you gotta pay up) and you have the ability to go with an electric one, I picked up a $90 pole saw at Menards (forgot the brand), but it does an exceptional job of trimming.

Also, for typical limited amount of trimming branches that the typical home owner does, not dealing with yet another internal combustion motor is a plus. The electric is a 'store it and forget it until you need it' type thing. Again, this info may or may not suit what you need to do with the pole saw.

I too agree that 12-14 feet is a huge reach and you really gotta have upper body strenth to cut large amounts of stuff. There is a ton of leverage at those longer lengths.

+3 I have a manual 14' pole-saw and that sucker is brutal on the upper body and back after the first few branches, fully-extended. Add another 10lbs or so to the end of the pole and you'd better stock up on Advil.

Now I just hire the pro tree-trimmers for the up-high stuff, LOL.

You don't need to be Charles Atlas to operate a pole saw. First the majority of the weight is at the base of the pole, not at the head.

Second, when using the shoulder strap your shoulder is more or less the fulcrum (ala 1st class lever) and you use more balance than strength to operate.

Lastly, pole chainsaws are meant to rest on the branch they're cutting. Most also have "teeth" at the base of the blade so if there's any kick the saw stays put and continues cutting.

I was just wondering how long of a pole comes with the V8 saw? I would like to climb up in the tree and do some light trimming. That way I won't have to climb around in the tree.
