MTV "Scarred"

I feel like somebody's whiny grandma, but I was hanging out with my girlfriend's 8 year old boy and we were talking about TV. Guess what his favorite show is?

You gotta be kidding me. Jackass was stupid and sometimes funny. Bam is stupid and not funny, but this is getting dangerous.

And the thing is, the guys making these shows are all my age and they have little brothers and nephews and kids, and they know what these shows do to the little kids who watch them. BE FAMOUS FOR HURTING YOURSELF. SIGN UP TODAY.

No more MTV for me. Good thing I'm a musican, I won't need it.

my .02 cents

I have to disagree (maybe it's because of my age), but I watched 3 episodes of 'Scarred' in a row on Saturday night, my 14 yr old brother turned to it when there apparently was nothing else better on TV, and I really liked it.

I guess I liked it not because of the 'seriously hurt yourself, become famous' idea, but rather because it shows just how dangerous those extreme sports can be. If anything else, it makes me glad I've never attempted to do any of that stuff on a BMX bike (yes, I have one) or rollerblades. I have horrible balance, so I've never been able to skateboard. Just about the only sport I'm good at is skiing, and even then, I'm not inclined to show off and do jumps, etc.

When I was a lot younger, like 10 years younger, I'm sure I wouldn't have been afraid to do tricks and stuff, in fact, I was really good at rollerblading, I could go backwards and stuff; I even fancied myself a speed skater at the Olympics, hehe.

Now I have this thing called FEAR. It won't let me do anything remotely dangerous for fear that I'll break something. In 23 years of living, I've never broken a single bone in my body, and I'd like to keep it that way.

The reason I like 'Scarred' is because I feel it shows the dangerous side of the sports, the side you don't see in the skate videos on DVD and online. For every one successfully-executed extreme-sport video, there's probably at least 5 that have ended up in serious injury to the participant(s). Kids need to see that. Parents need to see that. I'm just glad my brother and his friends grew out of their skateboarding phase; it was fun while it lasted, and I admit to vicariously living thru them, but it's a relief that they've moved on to more safe things, such as texting and video games

Thanks Jeremy! I just checked out the website and looked at a few of the pictures. I really did not need to see some guys messed up knee. I'm out of the loop on the shows. No T.V. for me in the last 9 months. From what I saw, it seems like a show with stories about the really nasty injuries? Are they promoting extreme sports/activities any more than that MaxX show on FX (or Spike)?

Anyway, can't really comment without seeing the show, but I thought Jackass and The Wild Boys were rather stupid and really promoted going out and having a friend let a snapping turtle chomp on some body part or the stapling yourself.

I can't really be the hypocrite and not show some stupidity...
Age 32 (2 winters ago), Snowmass, First picture shows me about 26' from the bottom of the half-pipe. The second is what happens when you hit the lip and it tosses you back in - 20' drop straight on my right shoulder and head (nothing but my bandanna to protect me . I tore just about every ligament in my shoulder, could've been worse. I was back skiing 2 months later for a day - against doctors orders, but I needed to get back on the horse.

I also speed skate on roller blades these days. Sub 5 minute mile

I remember when there was music on VH1! Now it seems the only music channel anymore is Fuse.

My only point is that:
This crap isn't the ABC Monday night movie that my Grandma wouldn't let me watch because somebody kissed somebody.

The only people watching this, besides P911G, are little kids whose "good idea vs. bad idea" radar isn't even turned on yet. The only thing that gets through is "look at this guy who jumped off the roof of his 2 story house on a pogo stick!!!!! He's on TV!!!!! Check him out!!!!!!"

It's just another one to throw in the ratings vs. responsibility bin, with the VA Tech massacre and Nicholas Berg beheading videos.

Whos Nicholas Berg? Exactly.

I enjoyed Jack Ass, thought it was funny as hell. I had to turn Scarred off after the previews, the injuries they were showing were stomach turning.

Is it worse than Trauma in the ER on Discovery? Not much, just a different venue and different reasons for the injury. If you / girlfriend doesn't think it's suitable for an 8 year old, don't let them watch. It's actually like a lot on MTV, MTV2, Fuse, etc, not a lot suitable for young kids, whatever the program.

In my opinion it doesn't glamorize the riders or the injuries, but is a real look at what can happen when things go wrong. I've caught a couple shows - skateboarding, snowboarding, BMX bikes and power lifting were shown.

Yup, all those activities have risks involved, just by participating. Better to sit and watch and maybe explain - that's why we make you wear a helmet, etc, etc when you ride your bike.

What get's me is the composure of the friends doing the filming. In most cases the camera doesn't stop rolling and there's typically no "Dude, you all right?"

well, im 40ish, and i LOVE watching it. Of course I also loved 'Trauma in the ER' and all shows like that on Discovery also. When i sliced my arm open in my teens, (240 stiches, and tendon repair and years of PT) the doctor kept yelling at me to stay still because i was squirming around tyring to get a better view of the inside of my arm and him stitching me up.
