the social stigma of owning more than one sportcar
It was bad enough when I bought my porsche
Now I have the itch to add a superclean restored triumph TR4 to my garage The only thing that is holding me back is the thought of having to explain to my family and friends why I have two summer only sportscars when I only get to use them once in a blue moon. We all know that the right cars don't depreciate significantly.....so why is the stigma so bad? Words of wisdom from the folks with a small stable of cars? To me these cars are like fine art.....but even better!

What stigma? In SoCal it's de rigueur to have multi sports cars.

well, i have a '79 targa hot rod, '78 coupe, and a 550 spyder replica. i keep thinking about getting something practical, how would i rationalize that to myself.
never complain.....never explain. if they understand, good. if they don't, too bad for them. |

And the problem with that is???
![]() Every car is a different experience... it is what I enjoy... working with the cars, just looking at them... I don't really care if others do not understand it... it provides balance and the best therapy in the world. Do it for your own health

Why do you even care what anyone thinks? If it's your money, it's your perrogative.

You don't seem to have yet embraced the concept of the automotive wardrobe. There is no such thing as a do-it-all vehicle, so you must (MUST) collect a different, perfectly suited, vehicle for every occasion and activity.
This is why we own seven ... no, eight vehicles! The TR4 will make you appreciate the SC more. And vice versa.

Buy it and don't apologize to anybody!
I only have a Porsche and an MGB, but I am always looking for another sports car to add. I belong to a British car club, and some members of that club have 5-10 cars! It is a great hobby and passion, enjoy it! Craig

Having to worry about what other people think when you own multiple toys is enviable problem.
I think TR4's & TRA's are great cars. Choose not to believe in stigmas. They usually marginalize a group of misunderstood people and they're no fun.

Do what I did- Buy an old warehouse! Nobody knows what lies behind the big garage door. Some people know I have a race car, but I don't keep it, or the other cars, at home. Just the 911, usually sitting under a cover so it doesn't draw attention.
An old Triumph is only going to draw good attention. It doesn't scream that your a rich snob like a Ferrari could. It's just a nice, old sports car. People will either appreciate it, or ignore it. |

Who cares what everyone else thinks! I work at a bank and get all kinds of flack from my coworkers for owning a Porsche 911. I get comments like oh, it must be nice to be making that kind of money, etc. Once I explain to people that my Carrera costs less than their Camry they quiet down, but ultimately I don't care what they think. I bought the car for myself and for my son and wife also to enjoy and that's all that really matters to me.
Buy the TR4 and don't apologize to anyone for owning 2 sports cars!

I took quite a bit of teasing when I owned 3 Porsches (911, 944, and 928), but it was all good-natured. As vices go, being into cars is one of the better ones to have.

I try not to worry what other people think.... My biggest problem is trying to decide which car to take to a show
There will always be the envious people who are jealous of the toys you have collected, in many ways it is like being a boy all over again! "who has the newest, coolest slot car" only now they are full size!! -Nick

When I walk out the door in the morning I have to decide what I feel like driving, The 911, the 944, or the E36. Buy what you feel like, if someone doesn't get it...........they just don't get it. It's not for you to explain to the masses.
