photo recovery freeware?

Shot my first engagement portrait session and my sandisk picks that very moment to crap out! Called tech support and was referred to LC-Tech for recovery software. I ran the software and it worked perfectly BUT you have to buy it ($40) to keep the images.

I have no problem dropping $40 for software that has already paid for itself (REALLY happy with some of the shots i got) but am wondering if there is freeware out there that works just as well.
