Tailgaters
I’m b-tching again about jerks on the freeways.
I wonder what political party tailgaters gravitate too. It reflects the "Me first" and get the h-ll out of my way attitude. basically a overall lack of respect for other people. What is a good payback for aggressive tailgaters? What can Joe Shmoe do to get them off you arse? I’ve heard of windshield washer fluid in the slipstream works…? I wish I was a California Highway Patrolman at times like this morning. I was being tailgated (3 feet from my rear bumper) for miles in the carpool lane going 80 MPH with someone in front of me. No where to go, but get out of the a_sholes way so he could tailgate the guy in front of me…If I could, the state would make a mint off of me giving tickets to these boneheaded jerks The following infractions would warrant a ticket from me……. 1. Aggressive tailgating (I would take them to jail for reckless driving) 2. Neurotic lane changing with no blinkers (The idiots who cant stay in one lane). 3. Nuclear headlights that are adjusted improperly. (the ones which burn the corneas out of you eyes from your rear view mirror). 4. Jerks cutting in and out of the Diamond lanes over the yellow lines. 5. Inept people playing CHP… going to slow in the fast lane to show you that you shouldn't exceed 65 MPH. Porsche Exclusive 6. And all other dirt bags who have to prove their car is faster than your Porsche...(I don’t need to explain) 7. Anyone tailgating a Porsche because they have a short Johnson….( Need I explain) 8. Anyone stopping behind a Porsche and seeing just how close they can get to your Whaletail.. then looking at you in your rear view mirror to see if your getting nervous.. Like I have said in other threads…Get on the freeway and get into the mix of traffic, then give her a little gas and watch the frenzy. “ Oh Geez that Porsche cant pass me” attitude Taking your life in your hands daily……

Ahhh, isnt there a law over there called "slower traffic keep right?"
I do not tailgate but really get tired of people sitting in the left lane at ANY speed. Seems that our society had hatched a bunch of people who feel that they pay their taxes and so they can sit in whichever lane they want to, at any speed they wish, then get pissed off when someone feels (sometimes rightly so) that they are hindering the flow of traffic. Guess I am old fashioned but I feel that if someone is on my back end that I am probably holding them up and need to adhere to the law that says "slower traffic keep right" no matter how fast the traffic is flowing...

You are both right. Driving has been dumbed down to the point when highways are only half full delays and slowdowns occur.

There are pullouts ever few miles, I would have just pulled out, let him get in front of me and tailgate the driver in front, and maintained a safe distance behind him.
Problem solved. I don't have any interest in being a traffic enforcer or trying to teach "lessons" to anonymous drivers on the road that I know nothing about, and have no desire to have a meeting with. |

Not saying that you are the "bad guy" but if someone is chewing on my rear I am going to let him by. If the cop stops me for crossing the white line will point to the guy speeding off into the distance and say "I was concerned for my safety and moved aside"... then mention "BTW officer, why was the tailgater not stopped for breaking the law as well? " Guess it just smokes me to have to deal with all these people sitting in either the HOV or passing lane and driving at a slower speed than others on the road. Move over and let the faster traffic through.

Going over the Grapevine (LA to Bakersfield) I passed hundreds of cars while I was in the slow lane. Lots of knuckleheads driving slow in the faster lanes.

I tailgate in the left lane, am I any worse than the guy holding up traffic?
This morning after following two trucks running side by side for a couple miles, I lost it and passed in the left turn lane. I noticed in a recent poll that Houston ranks #11 for aggresive drivers. With the way I drive, I thought we'd be ranked higher .

Tailgating doesn't bother me unless I'm on the bike or the tailgater is a big truck. If they hit you, it's automatically their fault. I'd rather take a hit on the rear bumper than anywhere else too. But I'm usually the fastest car on the road, so I don't get tailgated very often and I NEVER EVER ride in the left lane unless I'm passing someone. The car pool lanes around here are seldom faster than the other lanes. So even if I have a passenger, I often pull out of the car pool lane to get ahead.

From Mr. Manners on polite driving:
"Be kind to others on the road, including other drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and tollbooth attendants. Try to give others road space, let people in when merging, and wave to say thanks when someone does something nice for you. Indicate your intentions on the road with turn signals and the like, and pay attention to the lane you are in. On the highway, pass on the left, and stay to the right if other cars are traveling faster than you. When you approach a slow merge, let the cars mix in like a shuffled deck of cards: a car from one lane followed by a car from the other lane. If traffic is slow on an exit ramp, it is OK to merge as long as you are not crossing a solid line, but try not to cut everyone else off at the last moment." On single lane roads I move to the shoulder to allow faster traffic to pass. Seldom do they wave : (

Perhaps a switch to a valve on a small oil supply which would put an ounce or so of used oil into the exhaust? If nothing else, the SOB would have to wash the oil off his car and you could pretend you were James Bond. Or just move out of the *********'s way at the first opportunity. Life is too short.

If I were trapped in the HOV lane with no turnouts and being tailgated, I would let my foot off the gas and coast down to the speed limit, perhaps a bit under. If he did not get the picture, I would flash my brake lights 3 times. If he still did not get the picture, I would stand on my brakes and tell the officer a cat ran in front of me when he came to take the police report regarding an at fault driver hitting me from behind. Pray he has insurance if he hits you.

I believe chronic tailgating mirrors a certain personality trait in which one generally don´t find humility, calmness and pleasantness as critical features.

Solution for tailgaters, assuming you are NOT in fast lane holding them up, and have room in front of you to maneuver:
Step 1: Down-shift, matching revs, maintaining same speed. Step 2: Mash gas pedal while simultaneously applying brake with left foot (just enough to trip brake light). Watch them fade into the distance. ![]() I think the problem stems from the fact that most idiots on the road think that "they" are going the perfect speed, and anyone going faster than them is crazy/irresponsible, but anyone going slower than them is slow/impeding.

i have been rear-ended hard in a traffic accident. it really sucked and i rank it the scariest of all my crashes. for the above example, i would have moved over and let the jackass on by. i guess same, idea as joe.
