Dividend Reinvestment and Stock Purchase Plan
If you are a resident of California, Nevada or Arizona, an employee, or a customer, you can participate in a DRIP with SouthWest Gas (SWX). I have been toying with the idea of investing a bit in this and am wondering if anyone here on the left coast has already done so or has any thoughts on investing in a neatural gas distributor, given the current energy scenario.
The only drawback, and this may just be personal preference, unless the stock is jointly owned, it goes through probate since they do not have a "Transfer on Death" option. Any thoughts?

Utilities are traditionally good income stocks. In other words, pay nice dividends to widows...but they aren't looked upon as growth stocks. What's the P/E ratio on this one? Also, don't put all your eggs in one basket. Remember Enron, WPPS, and others...

If you're worried about estate taxes, can't you form an LLC and buy the stock with you and the little lady owning half of the LLC?

MRM...THinking along that line...
PWD: THis investment would be a very small part of my holdings and since I am retired, income would be nice. I think the most recent dividend was $.86 per share with shares in the mid 30s. The fundamentals look pretty good and the pop in the service area is growing faster than any other in the country.

I thought everyone reinvested their dividends. Have I been doing it wrong all these years?

At this point I would do precisely that (do not need the added income) but I would pay tax on the re-invested dividends as if I had collected the cash.

And, after the initial investment (a couple hundred shares) I can have a specific amount added to my gas bill every month for additional purchases if I desire. The good news is my gas bill, except for January and February average about $25 a month!!
