Any of you guys read Lee Child's "Reacher" novels?
I'm on my 5th or 6th right now ("The Enemy") and man, can he get your pulse going. Reacher is just a bad***.
I'm a sucker for military stories, and also like character driven stuff that isn't just brainless action. Child has such a well developed, interesting character built up in Reacher. Sure all his books basically have the same plot, but it's great stuff for a hot afternoon. What else is good to read if you like Lee Child? Colin

I've read all his books. If you like his stuff you might want to try Stephen Hunters books. Just make sure yo start with the first one.

They're OK, same basic plot in each one however. Loner stumbles onto a problem involving and old g/f or a girl he knew when she was someone's little girl, now all grown up. Rescues the female from the bad guys. Drifts away from her now that the job is done, repeat in the next book.
If you want to read some very funny stuff, my wife turned me onto, try the Janet Evanovich novels, about a young female bounty hunter and her perspective on life and men, they're very funny. Not just for chicks.

Another for Stephen Hunter. His stuff is very good. He almost skirts literary levels.
James Webb is another and Tim O'Brien. James Dickey's "To The White Sea" is completely kick-ass. Great story with a balls-out main character.

I read very few books, but I've read Trip Wire and the Enemy on business trips and they're definently in the hard to put down category.
I also like Nelson Demille. The Lion's Game is similar to the Reacher novels.

Janet Evanovich James Webb Tim O'Brien James Dickey's "To The White Sea" Nelson Demille "The Lion's Game" Cool, I'm getting a summer reading list put together. Thanks! Got to love paperbacks - lots of entertainment for $7. I've been plowing through some of Ludlum's stuff, but after 300-400 pages of a 700 page book like "Sigma Protocol" he just runs out of steam. Is the James Webb above the same guy as Senator Webb? I've heard he wrote some really gritty books.

During his campaign in Virginia last year, the Republican opposition tried to use Webb's writing career against him. Didn't work, though.

great thread. I agree with all of the above. Will add Wilbur Smith. Start with Birds of Prey, Monsoon, and Blue Horizon.
