What is the best setup for voice over internet now?

My parents want to do this (lots of out-of-state relatives) and I told them the Pelican brain trust would know the skinny. Applying the K.I.S.S. principle, what is the way to go here (service and equipment). Thanks.

Check out packet8 - a friend of mine has them and he likes the service.

I would stay away from Vonage because of the legal trouble they are having.

Been with Vonage for over 3 years, happy (aside from not having call blocking), works good with international calls too.

I use Skype around the world. Works very well and no problems with the connection quality..

I also use Skype and love it, total bargain.

I use Vonage and have had great luck. I expect they will shortly pull out of the legal troubles, either directly or by being purchased by Verizon.

Another vote for Packet8. I've been using it for a couple of years now with no hitches excepting that the line doesn't work well with faxes. But who uses faxes nowadays??? The pricing certainly seems comparable to other VoIP suppliers, and the quality is better then my wife's VoIP (via calling card) company (who shall remain nameless!).

I doubt that Verizon will buy the company.

5.5% of your monthly bill already goes to Verizon, which is why I canceled my Vonage. (That’s why the price just went up)

One thing that I do not like about Vonage and Packet8 are that after you buy the IP adapter and use it with them, you can never use it with any another carrier. They "brick" the device. I am not sure if sunrocket does this or not.

I have Earthlink service and so far so good.

AT&T here for 3 years. Perfect.

And I might add that I have never received better customer service for something I pay so little for. Outstanding.

I use Skype mostly been good and easy to use and set up. If there are more than around 8 million users on at one time sometimes quality can drop off but overall good and in hindsight I would be happy to pay again.

Same here - Skype sounds more like a landline every time I use it. Even from UK to USA cellphones.

Sunrocket had a good deal awhile back - something like $400 if you pay for 2 years in advance. Do the math.

We used this to outfit our office with service for 2 years, 2 lines. So far, so good - no issues.
