Anyone bought a new Mustang GT lately?
 

How much are they coming off sticker? The GT's with automatic MSRP around 30-31k. How much can I expect them to come off that? Do I ask for the invoice price and offer a $$ amount over that? Any suggestions would be helpful.

I am still looking for my Dad for Fathers Day gift (I am simultaneously looking at late 60s Fastbacks as well) but the new ones with full safety equipment and warrenty's are appealing as well.

Really depends on your part of the country. Around here, most domestics are marked up 10% ABOVE sticker price, and the dealers are utter jerks about it. In an unrelated note, there are way more foreign cars on the road around here.

Don't get me going on domestic dealers.....they are a prime reason why the big....errrr.......kind of big three are getting killed.

j/k You can check out Edmunds to see what people say they're getting their cars for. Not just the TMV bit (I'm a bit skeptical about the validity of that), but there are message boards specific to each model, as well. Look on those boards, and people will tell of their purchasing experiences. Sometimes people report their supposed deals as $$$ above invoice(i.e. "I got my car for $100 over invoice"), and others report their pricing as a percentage of MSRP (i.e. 91% of MSRP).

I thought about buying a GT. After driving one several times, I decided it was a nice $18,000 car.

You know? I'm kind of thinking in the same vein. Not Mustang necessarily, but definitely V-8. Cindy & I together drive around 8,000 miles per year. $10 per gallon gas wouldn't hurt us that much. This makes V-8 powered machines attractive, price wise...

All that said? As a birthday gift? Your dad would NEVER enjoy a new Mustang as much as he would a well restored '66 fastback with a 289. I'm saying this as a guy about to turn 64.

CarsDirect.com shows a GT at $500 over invoice minus $1,750 in rebates. Their deals can be beaten, but not usually by much in a situation like this.

Good info guys. Im torn between an old classic and the new model. If it were for me there would be no question I prefer the old restored classic. But my dad is not a DIY guy and would worry about safety (no airbags) and reliability. Most of the old ones I've seen don't have a/c. He'd tool around town and take down to the lake (Ozarks--6hr drive). He's got a Nissan Maxima for daily driving. I'm going to test drive a new GT tomorrow and would really like to drive a '66 just to see how streetable they really are with drum brakes and crappy seats/belts.

I just sold a 66 coupe, 289, good looking car. But there was no AC, no power steering, replaced the drums with front discs. But there was wind noise, rattles, exhaust fumes, suspension squeeks, etc. My son drove it for awhile, but opted instead for a 85 Supra because it was more tractable around town.

But almost every time I stopped for gas in it, someone would ask if I wanted to sell it.

If you don't think cars have come a long way in 40 years, you should take a drive in an old one. Porsche's excluded of course ;-)

I drove a GT. I wasnt impressed. Just like driving a big soft geezermobile. Salesman was a sleaze and I told him so. Like it says above. It's a nice $18,000 car

I'm a ford hater. Had two, both total lemons plus the dealers were liars and crooks. If you tried to give me a new ford for free i'd probably punch you in the nose.

mustangs = overrated, unless you are talking classic Shelby.

Haven't put a lot of miles on them, but have rented various late Mustangs including the Shelby Hertz variant and found them very crude and plasticy (is that a word?). I have been driving mostly European and Japanese cars for 25 years so that is my frame of reference.

I was thinking about buying a Mustang GT, then I checked with my insurance agent and bought a 2007 MazdaSpeed3 instead. I love the MS3 and the insurance is cheap!

Caroll Shelby admitted that he didn't want to make the shelby mustangs. He called them a "secretary's car' and never got the kind of power out of those engines he wanted.
He is a smart man. even the shelby mustangs are gutless and over rated. Wow, a hopped up 428 CJ with 335 horsepower. I'm impressed.
