Power Book G4 question
I have a Power Book G4 that is about 3+ years old and I would like to upgrade to Tiger 10.4 from 10.2.8 (Panther). Can someone tell me what capabilities my Power book must have in order to make this transition without encountering problems in the future. Is this worth doing? Will I lose all stored files on the computer. I currently have 256MB memory and 867 MHz processor and no firewire capability. No problems with Panther, just want the new system and the gadgets. Computer works fine and I see no reason to buy a new Power Book to the tune of 2 grand.
I'm not near an Apple store and want buy the upgrade over the internet but only if I can install w/o any problems. Apple tells me to bring the computer in and they will install for a small fee since I do not have service agreement, don't want to do this as have some confidential material on the computer. If I can do it myself, have no problem as long as it should work. Any advice would be appreciated. |

It will just work... (I have 10.4.x on a G3 iMac wiht a 350mhz cpu)
However, you may want to buy some extra memory for a BIG speed boost... not required, but you'll notice the difference.

Thanks for the the quick reply. What would the cost be to get the extra memory and can I install that myself or do I need to get that done at the Apple store. sorry for the stupid questions.

Extra memory will be cheap - you can probably max it out for under $100. Easy to put in too - it only fits one way.

Depending on your model, you should be able to just pop the keypad off and install your chip(s).
Also see the Apple links on the following page: http://www.transintl.com/technotes/titanium.htm Best, Kurt |

Another question??
I put 512 of extra memory in to max out at 640,(had to take 128 board out). Where will I see the improvement? in all aspects of operation or just in running more software at the same time as well as more complex software. I will install Tiger now but do not have the software at my present location. Thanks for the feedback. |
