How Late Have You Worked On Your Car?

...or how often do you do after-hours "tinkering"?

It's about 11:45 P.M. here on the West Coast. Wife and kids are sound asleep, and I'm out in the garage messing with the P-car. Anyone else out there pull this crap?

slodave 05-18-2007 10:49 PM

Yup. I can't do too much where I live, but I still mess with interior things.

oh yeah, my wife has wanted to kill me a few times for staying up late working on the car. I think my record is something like 2:30 or 3AM when I was trying to get my last car put together to sell it.

WPOZZZ 05-18-2007 11:09 PM

I do that lots of times.

3:00 a.m. east coast. Yes, P-cars rule. Can't get enough of that smell. i told a friend just a few minutes ago that she had to be approved by my P-car, not the other way around.

I pulled an "All-nighter" putting my engine back in the car. By the time I was done, the sun was coming up.

ikarcuaso 05-19-2007 12:00 AM

OK, it's about 1:00 A.M. I think I'll knock off early. ;)

livi 05-19-2007 12:56 AM

No way.

My spouse requires my presence and services in bed no later than 10 pm.

Oh Haha 05-19-2007 02:06 AM

I do it all the of the time. I can get a lot done, quietly of course, after the wife and kids are in bed. Our bedrooms are right above the garage so I can't be doing noisy work. I was in the garage until 11pm last night cleaning the interior of the 911. It helps me unwind from stressful workdays, too.

Haven't worked real late on the Porsches but when I was restoring my Corvette back in the day more than once I'd think "that's enough for tonight", throw up the garage door only to find a sunrise........

osidak 05-19-2007 04:15 AM

I have worked on cars until 12 noon.......... Started at 8 pm the night before.

Oh forgot the time I started at 8 am Saturday and got into the shower at 5 am Sunday

In the process of installing a motor, it was pretty remarkable to see the sun rise, firing the motor around 7AM and going for a trip around the block by 7:30!

Behavior that she would term ridiculous!!

1 am the nite before.....9pm last nite. I'm reassembling the 356 motor. Just got all the powder coated tin back. Looks nice and clean...wonder how long it will last.....

dweymer 05-19-2007 06:00 AM

I was up painting until 12:30am, compressor going full tilt! I have been up till about 5am working on it at other times though.

I have a remote garage, up the hill about 200 feet from the main house on a 1/2 acre....I keep the doors and slider closed when working late.

I have an idiot across for the entrance that gives me grief....I remind him that HE was the one that called the PD on my hotrods when they were on the street and I built the garage to abate the complaints......he then shuts up....for awhile.

Yeah, my girlfriend is nearly sure that there is someone else. I find that I do my best work either early in the am, or late at night. I usually go up to the shop every saturday night at about 8:00, and get home around 3:00 am, it is the only time that I can work interupted. I like to do engine work like this. I couldnt count how many times I have still been turning a wrench when the sun came up. I have always been a gearhead, and The late nights I spend in the garage are my therapy, and is what I look forward too all week.

When I was putting my car back together, back when I worked 9-5 on weekends, I would get up at around 4am and work until 7:30am before getting in my slacks and button downs to go to work. It was a tough shower to make my self look presentable and there was many a time that a customer asked if that was a bruise on my arm.

Late night

My worst happened while I was doing the final assembly on a motorcycle. I had all the parts and fasteners at had along with all the parts that had been plated, polished, powder coated or painted. In other words, everything was there.

I started after dinner, around 8:00. When I do mechanical work I do not wear a watch. It was one of those times when everything just went together with out a problem; the CD player was loaded with old songs and it was as if time stood still. Once again I was 18 years old and 59 was a long way off. But all good things must come to an end; and so did the evening when my wife opened the door and said, "Do you have any idea what time it is?" My answer was on the tip of my tongue when I notice the the first hints of a new day coming through the garage door windows. It was 6:15 am and it was the end of an evening I will never forget. The bike was finished.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1179591837.jpg

3 am ET as well... After getting from work, spending time with the children... then, on to the garage...

I once did the chagne of plug wires and coils in the 964 and then took the car for a test drive... 3 - 3:30 am... sickness indeed...

Glad to hear I am not the only nut doing stuff like that...

Never too late to put the hands on the P-car. I forgot how many times passing midnight.
