Definition: Illegal Gun?

Title says it all, what is an "illegal gun". I know that there is the Mayors ... against illegal guns and various campaigns agains illegal guns.

But, what is considered an illegal gun? I can't find a proper definition anywhere.

That's because unless you live in Chicago or DC, there really isn't any such thing.

Chris,

There's a local move to gather all "illegal guns" currently; sponsored by Crimestoppers and they are even giving rewards for tips. Thus my question.

Cheers, Juan

In Florida? There isn't much that's illegal there.

It's like saying "we are going to gather all illegal cars".

Joeaksa 05-24-2007 06:34 AM

Juan,

There are really no illegal guns, as long as you have the proper paperwork and are not a convicted felon, or not a felon who has had their rights restored to own weapons.

Machine guns, mortars, silencers and such are still legal as long as you have the class 3 license and have done all the paperwork.

Sawed off shotguns and pistols with the serial numbers ground off is probably what they are talking about but like Legion says it all depends on your local laws.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Edit:
The above link gives this as illegal:
* Fully automatic machine guns
* Gun with an obliterated serial number
* Gun not detectable by a walk-through metal detector
* Shotgun with a barrel length less than 18 inches, or an overall length less than 26 inches
* Rifle with a barrel length less than 16 inches, or an overall length less than 26 inches
* Silencer
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Much of the above is pure bull crap. A fully automatic machine gun is legal with a class 3 license, as is a silencer. There are no commercially made guns that will go through a metal detector without triggering the alarm.

The serial number issue is correct, as are the sawed off barrels on both rifles and shotguns. Guess 50% is a good ratio for the gun haters these days.

Joe

Thanks to all.

I gather no issues with older pistols that take 15, 18 or 30 rounds then... I own some that I consider pretty special and don't want to part with them.

id10t 05-24-2007 06:39 AM

You are in Florida, none of that crazyness here...

Joeaksa - short barrel shotguns are legal, again assuming paperwork/tax stamp is properly done...

Joeaksa 05-24-2007 06:40 AM

Juan,

Only in California are weapons with what they call "hi-capacity magazines" are illegal right now, and this is only on new purchase weapons. If you owned one in the old days and registered it with the state I believe that they are legal. You just cannot bring in new versions.

The old "snail magazine" for a Thompson that held 100 rounds, or some of the old Luger mags would hold 30 rounds are a hoot and somewhat rare.

I hear ya, its just that remember they don't seem to pay a lot of attention to individuals other than law abidding citizens like me.

****e, yesterday the police came home to warn me of allegedly watering my lawn in a day of no watering (all this whilst I was wiping down the SC with Zymol quick detailer). A neighbor put a complaint...

Poor cop looked pretty ashamed when I asked him to walk around the property and touch the dry ground and drying landscaping......

He did enjoy talking cars and having an expresso with me though but looked with interest at some of the used targets that were on top of one of the cabinets. Funny thing, I loaned him some tools to work on his souped up Mustang.

Sounds like one of those liberal feel good gun buy-back programs, which really only cause more crime as people break into cars & homes to look for guns to turn in for the No Questions Asked $25-$50 they pay for them:mad: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1180019834.jpg

Illegal gun: Any firearm in your possession which is not specifically listed in the personal data RF chip implanted in your neck.

Welcome to the future, Number Six.

I like Number Six. She's sexy.

In California if a Handgun does not pass the drop test it is not legal for a dealer to sell it, it can be consigned to him though, be an antique or be a curio and relic. Also Assualt Weapons, machine Guns and new High Capacity semi autos are all verboten in CA.

In NV and AZ none of that is illegal to own or sell. Also a regualr Joe in CA can only buy one Handgun a month.

Politically CA is in the hands of what used to be known as dope smoking Hippies. They have all grown older, put on suits and ties but in their hearts they are still tripin on those Blue Barrels of Acid while listening to the Greatfull Dead concert in their heads. They are honestly thinking of making Jerry Garcias birthday a State holiday in CA.

cashflyer 05-24-2007 09:41 AM

Drop test?
Is that somehow connected to the 5 second rule?

I forgot about that Six.
I was actually thinking of something completely different with my reference.

berettafan 05-24-2007 10:31 AM

i wouldn't mind running my own buy-back program. at $25 each odds are i'd come up with at least a few decent firearms! maybe i'll offer $40 for any 1911 of domestic manufacture and $50 for anything in 28ga. w/ double triggers.

fully-automatic machine guns. that's kind of like saying cold ice isn't it?
