Slingbox

So anyone got one? Reviews?

We've got DirecTV. And I'm about to replace my Blackberry 8130c with a Cingular 8525. Sadly, I don't qualify for an upgrade until next May, so I'm looking at a STEEP out-of-pocket cost for the new device (more that the price of an iPhone). Plus an additional $10/mo. for the data plan (vs. the BB data plan).

But I gotta do it! :p

I have a SlingBox hooked up to my home network so my former boss in Sweden and his family can watch TV. They record and watch sports events on the TiVO in my home from theor home in Sweden. We've been doing this for over a year with very, very few interruptions in service. In short, it's a rock-solid solution that works and even performs adequately across the Atlantic.

BTW, We have DirecTV, Netgear router, DSL and the DirecTV TiVO and everything works as advertised.

I was on a cruise ship watching The Sopranos finale on my phone, albeit a bit choppy. 15 minutes in, the screen goes black - "unable to stream video...weak signal". Damn.

Well, back on land (or anywhere a steady cell signal is available), I have a very viewable experience. UMTS, EDGE, whatever...doesn't seem to matter. The only issue I'm still having is getting the remote control to respond. It's stuck on whatever channel my satellite receiver is set. I'm sure it's a setup issue on my part, and I just need to fix it, but if anyone else has this device and can offer some input, that would be cool.

Be sure you have the latest firmware on the SlingBox and the latest client software on the PC. A few of the more recent updates really improved the reception in Sweden for my old boss from my Slingbox in Wyandotte, MI.

Nope, I don't have any of that fancy new-fangled stuff.

I was going to finally break down and buy a pager, but decided it would be just as cool and cheaper to carry my garage door opener on my belt.

azasadny, thanks. I installed it just on June 9th, but I'll check for updates.

LOL. I met a 30-something dude recently that "doesn't have email." Huh? Maybe I'll run into him using a pay phone trying to call around for replacement ribbons for his manual Smith Corona or Underwood.

Used it for years. Just turned my copilot onto it this morning. He called the wife and she went to Circuit City and bought one right away. He is now in the room watching the History Channel and happy again...

Works good, lasts a long time. Is a lot better hooked up to a Tivo unit.
