Where to buy an aftermarket auto extended warranty?
Just purchased a used car from a private party. The warranty expires in less than 500 miles. The car is a 2005 Honda Pilot EX-L. It's in great condition but, just in case, I think I'd like to buy an extended warranty.
Have you ever purchased an aftermarket warranty? From whom? Were you satisfied with their service, if you've used it? Thanks. |

I've never bought one, never will.
Common business practice is to close down after a few years and open up again under a new name so that if the customer has a claim, there is nobody to make the claim against anymore. They collect premiums, then kill the company before they have to pay out claims. No thanks. I would only consider an extended warrenty if it was offered directly from the manufaturer. |

Aftermarket warranties are dangerous. They're not affiliated with the manufacturer, so they don't often care if they treat you unfairly. And there tends to be "weasel clauses" that get them out of paying for many repairs. Try calling a few Honda dealers and ask for the F&I manager. They might be able to sell you a factory warranty, even though they didn't sell you the car. Also, sometimes insurance companies offer a program.

Dude - DON'T DO IT - just save your money , thats it period...
When I first bought my 996 all the horror stories about RMS failure rates on these car's scared the living ****ocks out of me , so I bought what was advertised as a # 1 , First Class , Best Out There , extended warranty. It was a bumper to bumper that picked up after the factory warranty expired and lasted another 6 years and / or 60 K miles reguardless of the miles on the car at the beginning of the period , SOUNDS GREAT RIGHT ??? Well I paid for it up front, just under 3 K I thought what the hell , I can drive the car like I stole it and if something breaks I am covered, yeah right, after about 6 months, the thing had not even kicked in yet I get a letter from the State Insurance Commisiioner where the company was based telling me that their license has been revoked and that they are going bankrupt and possible criminal and civil charges are going against the company officers for running a scam on people, seems that they never paid a single claim, I was told that I might get some kind of refund based on the sale of their assets, Long story short I was out the 3 K and got nothing.... So DONT DO IT , unless the warranty is underwritten by the manufacturerer themselves just DONT. Todd

I generally agree with not getting aftermarket warranties. More often than not, you do not come out ahead. If the companies were paying out more in claims than they were taking in, they wouldn't be in biz long.
That being said, I did buy one once, on a car I bought new and decided to keep long term. It has not been super reliable, and was expensive to fix. The bumper to bumper warranty extended the factory 4 year warranty for 4 additional years for less than $1500. I bought the extended right before the factory 4 year ended. Within 2 years, I was already ahead. The company was GREAT! I'd take the car to the dealer, the dealer would contact the company, and they ALWAYS paid, no problem. They even fixed all the little things, like a broken cupholder, while they were there and the insurance paid for it. Never had any problem or hassle with them paying claims. The company is Warranty Direct. www.warrantydirect.com. They've been around for a long time. Again, though, I'd pass on it in most cases, esp. on a Honda, which is likely to be reliable, unless maybe if the premium is very low. |

Don't you buy Honda's so you don't need a warranty?

Thanks guys. Great advice so far.
Yeah, I bought a Honda so I shouldn't need a warranty but, you never know... Definitely not going to buy a warranty now except from Honda. |
