Should the groom get the bride a wedding gift?

A friend is getting married this weekend and is wondering if he should have some type of a gift to give to his new bride. Before this gets sidetracked on all of the ‘gifts’ he’ll be giving that night, lets just assume he’s got that covered.

So, are there any traditions here? Is there an expectation that brides have?

*edit for spelling...

Yeah, show up on time. That should about cover it. Maybe a pearl necklace after the festivities.

I find it funny that there is this tradition of giving gifts after an engagement and before the wedding. Isn't the engagement ring a big enough gift? And isn't the wedding (a man's ultimate commitment ) a big enough gift?

Who the hell thought up this crap? Did DeBeers do that too?

I got married 3 years ago (today, as a matter of fact). This is a recent trend with weddings. My wife wanted something, I got her a set of Swarovski earings, necklace, and bracelet.

what a bunch of crap - a gift too? Have him remove his testicals and put them in a bag - he can give those to her for a wedding gift - pretty sure he won't be needing them after the wedding.

It's as much his day as hers, but I'm sure many will disagree. Maybe I'm an old fuddy-duddy, but for her to expect more is presumptuous. The day is about them as a couple, not just her.

smallish gift - of jewellery - the day before.
this is a tradition which shows love and respect.
The wedding day is all about the bride, plain and simple.

Great comments, keep em coming...

I think it would go well for him to have a little something either the day before or day of?

I'm getting married in July, and I have no intention of giving the bride anything beyond myself. It's our day, and we're giving each other ourselves. What other gift would make any sense?

Um, why does everyone assume that the gift has to be expensive? A gift on the wedding day is a nice thought. But it's not mandatory, either. Chicks love sentimental things. There are plenty of thoughtful gifts--small piece of ceramics, jewelry, artwork, etc--that she can look back on years later as a little remembrance of the wedding day. That being said, no, I didn't get my wife anything on our wedding day. Didn't think of it. But in retrospect, it could have been something as simple as a framed portrait of the place where we were married.

Are we not Men? What is it with the what should I do wedding posts? Do you even want her respect?

Yeah wifey, I got your wedding day gift, right here, it's a blood engorged erection! Don't give her words, show her you care. The best expression of love is free.

We are Devo. D-E-V-O.

A hundred years ago when my wife and I were married someone tipped me off to give her a memento of some sort and that she was doing the same thing. I was doing it last minute, as usual, so I hand wrote her a card with some mawkish sentiments and I think included some small trinket as a token. It went over well. I think it's a nice tradition. I think the key is that the private gifts between the bride and groom should be tokens. The rings are too, but that's different.

The man pays for the honeymoon and the ring, and the woman's parents pay for the wedding. Now he's got to get a gift, too!?! That's fair.

The woman shouldn't need jewelery or even a trinket to remember the most important day in her life.

Quick story: After I my wife and I got engaged and I handed over my blood to the jeweler and the ring to her, she thought I was getting short changed and offered to buy me a set of coilovers for my autox car (this was pre-Porsche)! Of course we are still together.

I bought her our bed, a 4-poster w/ canopy she'd been wanting.

The posts come in handy sometimes.
