Anyone have a Porsche 911 Chronograph?

Does anyone have a Porsche 911 Chronograph (see picture below)? I have been thinking of buying one & I am interested in learning if it is a good watch or not.

If you have one, has it been a good watch? Is it high quality? Is it worth $400+ (retail is about $600, but I have seen them discounted in the $400s)? Do you know who makes the watch for Porsche?

Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

I think that model is available from Porsche dealers. I would spend a little more and get the Porsche Design chrono if you want a Porsche related chronograph, used ones are always popping up for sale.

$600 for a Porsche automatic Chrono would hook me

$600 for a Porsche quartz Chrono would make me look the other way.

Not my cup of tea... there are others out there that look nicer but each person has their opinion.

Watches are like wives, when you buy it you soon see another you like better but if you wear it long enough, it grows on you.

I don't have one of these but I do have a fair bit of experience in the watch world, so I'll throw out a few generalizations, for what they are worth.

I've no idea who made the watch for Porsche but I'll guarantee it wasn't anybody special. A chronograph in that price range will use a fairly cheap movement. The water and dust sealing won't be great. It will have no value as a collectible piece, so you can judge whether it's worth it to you or not by asking yourself if you consider that amount of cash to be disposable. After sales service will have to be done by an independent watchmaker and I've never been happy with one of those.

As others have mentioned, for a little more money you could by a used Porsche Design watch, which is a completely different thing altogether. The early ones made by Orfina I'd suggest you avoid but the later ones made by IWC are very well made. They will also probably never be worth less than they are today. I have one I bought new that would sell today for more than I originally paid for it. The current production is made by Eterna, as Porsche Design bought the Eterna company, if I recall correctly. I don't consider these new ones as nice as the ones made by IWC, although they are all better than what is offered at the Porsche dealerships.

It all boils down to what you want.

Cheers,
JR
