Ducati….do some research before naming your bikes.

http://www.ducati.com/en/bikes/my2007/FamilyPage.jhtml?family=Hypermotard

Seriously. Hypermotard? Can anyone here say that with a straight face? Even thinking that name makes me giggle like a schoolgirl. Not only are you a Motard, You sir are a HYPER Motard!:D

kaisen 06-05-2007 10:56 AM

Maybe in Italian it loosely translates to 'tremedous phallus'

lendaddy 06-05-2007 10:58 AM

Actually it's a play on "SuperMotard" which is a class of bike like mine.

lendaddy 06-05-2007 11:01 AM

Lowered and monster brakes, a few other things...but yea it's a street legal MX bike and that's what makes it fantastic:D

Anyone that ever raced MX dreamed of riding it to work.

Jim Richards 06-05-2007 11:08 AM

Nice 'tard.

71T Targa 06-05-2007 11:09 AM

That Aprilia doesn't look street legal. Is it?

thrown_hammer 06-05-2007 11:12 AM

Not that one, but yes it's a street legal model.

cashflyer 06-05-2007 11:17 AM

How did that name evolve? (etymology)

I had always heard of that class as being supermoto, and the name supermotard used as a pejorative against the idiots that ride them.

(except Len, of course)

lendaddy 06-05-2007 11:17 AM

Here it is in street legal trim. FWIW, it's a 450 or 550 cc twin:D very cool/

Supermoto is the American name for the "sport" and in Europe it's "Supermotard".

Some of our euro buddies here can probably explain it.

svandamme 06-05-2007 11:24 AM

"motard" is french for "biker"

but i agree , it sounds crappy in that combination

Tim Hancock 06-05-2007 11:28 AM

I do short fun runs on the weekends. There's a school by me that's empty on Sundays and full of "obstacles" to play on.

But no, my fat ass doesn't commute on it yet...much more weight to lose before I could handle that. I'm not a particularly proud man, but I look look like a gorilla on a tricycle right now:D

NICKG 06-05-2007 11:52 AM

hyper motard is the monster for the new era...it is an amazing bike. i am trying to sell my 1000ss to ghet one now...going to the dealer unveil in 3 weeks for it.

thrown_hammer 06-05-2007 12:06 PM

I don't care how good or cool the bike is, I could never with a straight face say "I ride a Hyper Motard."

NICKG 06-05-2007 12:07 PM

then you just don't get it...no harm no foul.

I am sure the bike is phenomenal. It's a Duc. But HyperMotard is freakin' funny.

Jeff Higgins 06-05-2007 12:18 PM

That's right up there with Toyota's turd - "TRD", Toyota Racing Development.

I know nothing about bikes, but, my limited exposure to them through Killboy.com has taught me what a motard is. According to those folks its a really raw driving bike that is great on roads like Tail of the Dragon.

Gene Wilkes 06-05-2007 05:25 PM

SuperRetard!

thrown_hammer 06-06-2007 03:10 AM

MaxiTardimo!

Noah930 06-06-2007 06:54 AM

I dunno. Kinda like the name. Supermoto and supermotard are established names for this class of bike. So it doesn't sound weird to me to hear them. The races are pretty entertaining. And I'd hesitate to say Ducati hasn't done market research on this thing, seeing as how the factory--through its website as well as word-of-mouth through its dealerships--has been kicking around the concepts of the specs of the bike and the Hypermotard name pretty publically for the past year or so. IIRC, there was even an online poll as to what type of motor to put in the bike. So give it some time, and the name might not sound so strange to you, after all.

thrown_hammer 06-06-2007 07:22 AM

It may be a great race series, and I am sure the bike itself is the bomb, but there is no way around the fact that the name they chose (for whatever reason) sounds like they named it after a guy with A.D.D., a low IQ, and a tendency to turn out the lights and run around with scissors.

Some people say I just don’t get it…but I think if you can say HypermoTard with a straight face then perhaps you don’t get it. I suppose it is open to debate.
:D
