Internet censorship
Apologies if this is a repost
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6724531.stm Please read this newsclip about internet censorship. Now consider how much freedom an unrestricted internet gives us. We have free communication amonst ourselves, free to exchange our views. We have access to multinational information sources, we can shop how and where we want - obviously within the legal limitations of our home state. I believe the internet is the greatest aid to education and communication since the printing press. I believe that in the centuries to come it will be seen as the prime cause for a better, freer and more educated world. This sort of filtering could be applied to us overnight in Europe and the States. I know that the computer savvy amongst us could find ways around it. But it wouldn't be a lot of use if the other 90% couldn't read what they're posting. Think what your world would be like without the internet - and I don't just mean freely available porn. Think of the exchanges we share on these forums. The way we share and discuss news items. The sites we checkout for our personal research. It's like having a sophisticated public library on our desks. Consider what kind of political establishments approve(d) book burning, this is much worse! We must not take our freedom for granted and we must be vigilant that no attempts are made to erode it. This kind of filtering is the thin end of the wedge. If you agree with my sentiments, please share with others.

it would take the true geeks/hackers/coders just a few weeks to work up a solution for this, the only way they could truly implement something like internet censorship, is if they could actively monitor each and every node on the web, and break the tunneling encryption which would be used to do this...
which they simply can't do... i'm not worried about this one bit the only other solution is employing really crazy corporate style security, which is A to expensive, B to limiting for any business making money of the net China can do it, because it's an oppressive regime that can barge down the door of it's citizens and seize computers for free speech... that can't be done in the EU, and i'm sure it's not so easy in the US either... freedom of speech, privacy rules, etc etc... if they'de start doing that over here, we'de have more problems on our hand then just the internet

Was just in Dubai. The local telephone company (who is also the internet provider) has blocked Skype in that country. Wonder why? Because it costs them money when the foreigners do not use their system to call long distance.
Took a week to 10 days before several hackers got together and worked a way around the block. Now people log into a site out of the country then go to Skype. Problem solved. The phone company tried to block the new site so the guys moved the access around and around and finally they gave up after realizing that there was no way that they could keep up. Anytime someone tries to block or restrict something, there is usually a way around it. My email server (attglobal.net) is blocked in Saudi Arabia, but there are several ways around it.

Yep to what Joe said. I found out 1st hand this week that 8 year old boys can poke holes through all manner of security devices/applications and downlod hardcore porn to display in class.
Farken internet, I asked Jesus and he said it should'nt just be censored - it should all be torn down. Seriously, was life really worse b4 the internet arrived? Silly Q to ask here I guess, most of you spankers would have had no audience without it...........

"And remember only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you Jesus Christ, and the American Soldier One died for your soul, the other for your freedom They both are protecting your every minute you have remaining on this wonderful Earth."
Jezus Joe - WTF does that mean? Care to dumb it down for a foreigner?
