As a teacher, I have come to despise internet shorthand on assignments. I've come to tell the kids that I'll fail them for the quarter if they ever turn in BTW, LOL or whatever on an assignment.

Is that supposed to mean "The right stuff"

Two additional words that kill me: "irregardless" and "orientated".

A grammatical abomination I've embraced was unintentionally coined by a friend the other night, who in response to a question evidently started two different sentences at once. The result:

"Me gonna".

He tried nonchalantly cruise through with whatever he was saying, but I had to stop him. "Dude. Did you just start a sentence with 'megonna'?"

"Uh. Yes. Yes medid."

I now use megonna at every opportunity.

There ain`t no grammar issues that irk me more then those who think youre smarter if you spell like a cracker. Anyways, irregardless of how one spells, it dont make a difference to me whatsoever

Just don't be surprised if those "cool" west coast boys co-opt it, JP. Their trends always migrate from the East.

notstatic: "megonnabanyou."
Me: "Huh? You want a banana?"

Similar to the word "orientate", I saw a professional athlete once use the word "conversate" instead of 'converse'. I laughed and laughed and laughed.

This thread has clearly hit a hot button. Here are some that immediately come to mind that really bug me....

- "Where you at?" or "Where did you get that at? -- you don't need the "at"! (already mentioned, but worth repeating)

- "There's two cookies left" -- should be "There ARE two cookies left" (already mentioned, but worth repeating because it REALLY bugs me)

- "I could care less" -- should be "I COULDN'T care less"

- "I did really good" -- should be "I did really WELL"

- "There were less problems" -- should be "There were FEWER problems"

- Mispronouncing words, such as "real-a-tors", instead of "realtors", or "for all intensive purposes", instead of "intents and purposes"

I'm just glad that I am purfect.

I also like hate the word like as used by the youth of today. Like it's totally irritating. I've even like seen it written in sentences.

FEWER for integer quantities (cookies, minutes), LESS for anything that could be fractional (cookie dough, time)

Gotcha

What goes with the above words' opposites? xxxxxxx vs MORE?

My current beef: "We will try and do that"

Maybe "We will try TO do that" instead?

I have 2:

#1 Bring and Take.

You take things with you, and bring them back! You do not "bring" things along.

#2 Got

Got is the past tense of get. Did you get it? Yes, I got it.

"Got Milk?"

SHUDDER!

got <> have

Incorrect usage of the word, "broke" drives me crazy. For instance, when someone says, "My car is broke!" The word is broken for crying out loud!!!

This is one I am often guilty of. But, in my defense, I admit I spell it that way intentionally. It's prolly a slang form of the word, where I come from. I'll prolly always use it.
