Etymotic ER6i; wrap the leads over your ears to reduce microphonics.

I had a pair of the Ety ER6i's a few years ago, but returned them after a week when comparing them side by side with Shure buds.

I much prefered the sound of Shures, which were better constructed IMO with heavier gauge wire and a far better seal at the ear, (with various size rubber and foam tips included)absolutely crucial for proper bass in an earbud.

The Shure E2's are fine but E3's and above are fantastic, at least to my ears, and I use mine a couple of hours a day during the week.

I'd also highly recommend Earphone Solutions as a vendor.

Well, if you are looking for the best, I would consider custom-molded in-ear monitors.

There are several companies that make IEM's that require an audiologist to take a mold of your ears for their products.

These are probably at the higher end of the scale, but have received excellent reviews:

The Shure E2s fit inside a motorcycle helmet. Quiet enough to listen to a book on tape.

Not a fan of the Shure E2c's. The foamie plugs are too abrasive, the silicone plugs are too hard, and the entire 'bud itself is too large and bulky.

Sound-wise I'm not edumacated enough to tell the difference between the S. E2c or the E. ER6i. Probably because all I listen to are crappy MP3s anyway.

I will say that my E2c's spontaneously and inexplicably crapped out on a flight and Shure replaced them PDQ, no questions asked.
