Donate to the American Cancer Society.
I know there are many kind hearts here. I also know that many of you already donate and give much of your time and money to charities. Please feel no obligation to continue reading… Also, if this is out of line in any way, please delete.
For me, it’s the ACS. While I don’t have any first hand experience with cancer, the effects have touched my life. I’m sure that all of us have known someone who’s been affected by, or died from cancer. There is hope, and there will be a cure. This year, as I have for many years, I am participating in the ACS’ Relay For Life. If you would like to make a donation, no matter how small, please see my pledge page. Thank you for your time, Joel

I'd like to donate. No first hand, but plenty of second hand experience.
![]() But I'd really rather not have my name and address get on their mailing list--it's kind of the dark side of charities. PM me your paypal e-mail or tell me where to send a check and I'll be happy to help. |

How much of the donation will go to help people, and how much will go to "administration"?
I don't know about this particular charity, but many have people running them that make millions of dollars in salary. I give to my church, I know what the pastor makes. |

It's interesting how various BBSs are different about things like this. On another "OT" sort of board where I'm a member, any "sponsor me" charitable topics or especially a help out a member requests get massive support. One guy had a sick newborn and he and his wife were in the hospital pretty much all the time. The people on the board put over a thousand bucks together and sent him care packages of pre-cooked meals for a month. And that's a group that essentially started as a car and porn forum!

http://charityreports.give.org/Public/Report.aspx?CharityID=186 My wife used to work for the Canadian Cancer society. They are a great organization that spends their $$ very carefully. A small minority may criticize their focus on diagnosis & treatment, but they are not a wasteful organization. Your money will be put to good use.

The only thing worse is giving your info to professional charities (whcih I don't trust as far as I could kick them) is giving it to the $cientologists. An x-g/f I lived with did both - I was getting tons of junk mail until the day I left that house.

Joel,
I'm also participating in a relay for life in a few weeks. Good luck with your efforts. It's a good cause that I believe in as well. |

I'll give this one bump to see if anyone's feeling generous.

Having seen someone close to me suffer and succumb to cancer I should be the poster boy for donations. Unfortunately I see little progress in the area of a 'cure' and I believe my donations are much better used by a local cancer hospice that makes people comfortable in their last days.
But donating to either one is a noble gesture. |

Maybe not a 'cure', but I know three people on my relay team wouldn't be alive if it wasn't for the advancements that have been made in the last 20 years.

I could easily be wrong, we tend to judge science by anecdotal evidence, sonce we can't see the big picture.
But I know that cancer hospices do good work. That is irrefutable.

Agreed, hospices do great work. Very caring and compassionate people there.

I didn't mean to hijack your request for donations, only to give an alternative to anyone who didn't feel the ACS deserved funding.
