Botched medical procedure...Wife may die

Hi guys...

Sorry I have not been around recently. For about two months, my wife had some bleeding that required iron infusion. She went in on June 1 for a colonoscopy and they perferorated her intestines. THis led to a colostomy, and now she has developed something called acute pulminary distress syndrome. I am holding up pretty well for right now, tied to the phone for updates, but it is kind of wearing me down. The results of the original test showed no cancer, and the bleeding was due to a hemmorhoid (sp). Ironic, isn't it? They give her chances 1 out of three as of today, and they were 4 out of 5 a few days ago. I may come in to look around from time to time, but if she does not make it, a lot of life changes will be in order, and Porsche may not be one of my primary interests. We have been togeher 19 years, and they have been the happiest of my life, since my previous life included a mate with mental problems. I have been the lucky recipient of 19 years with a person who is mentally stable and unflappable.

Thanks guys..........THis is difficult. I moved out here 6 years ago because she loves AZ and I donot want to go back to the cold North. I have a few friends out here, but not as many as I left back east. I keep in touch by ohone, but with retirements and all, even those friends are scattered all over the map....North Carolina, Florida, Ohio.....

Thank you for the information. She is in my prayers. FWIW, my gut says she'll be okay.

Supe...I hope you are right. I had her visited by clerics that I know and that comforted me because she is under sedation and they have "paralyzed" her breathing so the machine can do its thing. For the medical doctors out there, this morning her PB was 100/60, pulse rate about 122 (a bit of atrial flutter) Oxygen was at 80% (down frem 100% yesterday but up from 50% three days ago when she was still awake), her oxygen saturation was 97 and they tell me that anything above 90 is good. Her kidneys are functioning well but she is "wet" with a lot of fluid due to the IVs. For the legal eagles.....What should I be doing if anything?

Same here. My father in law died of ARDS three years ago related to an infection and multple myloma. If I can give you any comfort it is that she is clearly strong to have made it this far and that if she is strong she can last on the respirator a lot longer than you can imagine, which is what gives her body the time to recover. My father in law actually was diagnosed with ARDS, we got the same speech you got, only to recover. The problem was that the infection was bad enough that when he choked on some liquids a few days later it started the syndrome all over again. But he demonstrated that you can recover from ARDS. She's in a fight for time to recover so no news is good news. God bless and you and she are in our prayers.

Keep up the good thoughts. I'm sure she'll pull through. Kinda going through the same here. I took my wife to dyalysis on Fri. and her bp was 220/150, so we went to the emergency and they have finally after five days now got her bp too low. I'm still not sure about doctors, sometimes. And the waiting and having to check the phone every two seconds can wear on you. Anyway thanx for letting me vent. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Your wife and family will be our thoughts.

It's impossible to give any accurate medical advice over a forum like this. But try not to hang on every word given to you by the medical people taking care of your wife. I realize that's nearly impossible. It's like telling you to go home and get a good night of sleep. But you'll torture yourself if you analyze and overanalyze every little word and nuance said to you. All you can do is hope for the best.
