Would you wait hours for free gas?
People in Warren Michigan are getting free gas (who cares why?) and they are lined up for over 3 miles to fill up. There have been fights within the lines and some have even run OUT of gas, waiting to GET gas.
 The funny part is, the Mayor of Warren is out there in a suit pumping the gas for folks. He's apparently going to stay there until one tanker's worth of gas is given away. Gonna be a looooong day! |
Nope. My time is worth more than a tank of gas. I suspect that while in line if you were really quite and still, you'd be able to hear and feel brain cells dying.

A tank of gas is about 50 or 60 bucks. 3 hours of my time would make that about 20 an hour or so. Not worth it - my time is worth about 2-3 times that.
|
It all depends on your income level I believe. I wouldn't sit in line to fill up, but if I was a poor HS/College kid making $6-$7/hour it would be worth it.

After Katrina and the stop in the supply of gas to stations. The lines here in Florida were very long and it would take you 1-2 hours to get up to a pump for gas.
I called up VP Racing fuels and asked what was the lowest octane gas they had in stock. 100 octane was the asnwer of the girl on the phone. I never asked the price, I ordered two 55 gallon drums of it and a pump. It was delivered the next morning. Now my 3 fleet trucks could get gas in the morning and get to work, I could not afford my crews, that bill out at $125 an hour to sit in line for 2 hours each waiting for gas. We laughed when we saw our competitors tucks sitting in line with crews in the. Yes, the gas cost me a LOT of money and it paid for itself the first morning my 3 crews did 2 hours worth of work instead of waiting in line. I also gas up at the nearest statio to me when I need gas, I do not drive around looking to save $0.05 a gallon on a fill up so I can save $1. |

On incomes and waiting in line - I thought about that, but most of the cars looked pretty decent. Newer Honda Accords and such. No beaters that I could see. You couldn't pay me $500 bucks to sit in my car going nowhere for hours on end. Although, I have done it for free in Toronto. :( |
A couple of weeks ago, Chipotle had a charity drive for the local food bank. You could get a free burrito ($6 value) if you donated a can of food. The line must have been 100 people long or at least 45 minute wait. The most amazing thing is that lots of people looked like they should be working. Now 45+ minutes for a $6 burrito just isn't worth it.

I wonder how much gas these people burned off getting their free gas?
