Angry "We Will Never forget!"...Yeah, right!

This is so pathetic, it's infuriating!

That is pathetic. It makes you wonder about those survey results on opinions about Bush, the Iraqi War, etc. The people deserve the government they elect. But, I'll bet most of those interviewed don't votes, or worse yet, vote on some criteria such as they like the way a candidate looks on TV.

Ask them what day the Declaration of Independence was signed? Ask your HS kids that and see what kind of funny answers they give U, bet it will make you laugh all day.

It started off with "What year did 9/11 happen?" Replies like, "2000?" "2002?" "2004?" ...okay, maybe that's understandable....

But then, "What date did 9/11 happen?" Replies like, "October?" or "September...ummm...nine eleven...yeah, September first!"

Sheesh!

I'll bet most of these guys know exactly where they were when paris showed up to jail...or was released...or had to go back....or...

The world is full of morons. Why is anyone suprised?

The only requirement for citizenship in the human race are 2 idiots, some Boones Farm wine, and a Journey 8-track. Once dad figures out where to put it, *Bingo*, you've got another moron on the way.

Man, the off topic forum is full of whiners, *****ers, and complainers.

Lighten up. If you can't remember your wifes birthday, does that mean you have forgotten who she is?

Keep in mind that many people freeze up mentally when they have a camera shoved in their face. Not to mention that they edit out the smart people, and only keep the footage of the idiots.

You expected New Yorkers to be aware of anything happenign outside New York? Silly boy.

Agreed, Joe's also got a point. Remember Letterman asking basic history questions to the person on teh street? Frightening.

Well, that is definitely sad. Randy, I couldn't agree more. Sometimes I think we as a society are moving backwards. But what do people remember? American history should be better taught and Americans should know their country's history. Here is my little history quiz, can anybody answer these?

What dates did the following happen?

D- Day ?

Pearl Harbor?

Atomic Bomb being dropped? What cities?

Lincoln Assassination?

Kennedy Assassination?

MLK Assassination?

Other questions...

What came first, Civil War or Revolutionary War?

Date of signing of Declaration of Independence?

Largest signature on Declaration?

National Anthem name? Who wrote it?

How many stars on the flag?

How many original colonies were there?

A little harder one...

What day was the Constitution signed?

How many slaves did George Washington have ?
George Washington was born into a world in which slavery was accepted. He became a slave owner when his father died in 1743. At the age of eleven, he inherited ten slaves and 500 acres of land. When he began farming Mount Vernon eleven years later, at the age of 22, he had a work force of about 36 slaves. With his marriage to Martha Custis in 1759, 20 of her slaves came to Mount Vernon. After their marriage, Washington purchased even more slaves. The slave population also increased because the slaves were marrying and raising their own families. By 1799, when George Washington died, there were 316 slaves living on the estate.

In his will, he arranged for all of the slaves he owned to be freed after the death of his wife, Martha. He also left instructions for the continued care and education of some of his former slaves, support and training for all of the children until they came of age, and continuing support for the elderly.

Courtesy of Mount Vernon.org.

Onramp, I learned something new tonight , thanks for the question.

Mmmm. But the nearest of those things happened over 40 years ago, and none, AFAIK, are known by the very date on which they occurred. Can there really be an excuse for not knowing that targets other than NYC were attacked on Sep 11 other than having your head up your arse?

I wonder what % of the people they asked they actually show in this video.

I have to admit, I'm sketchy on the year of the attacks, I believe its 2001, as I can remember a game I quit playing in early '02, just the whole playing servers emptied out, and everyone talked in the lobby for hours. So many times people said to nuke Afghanistan...

I could answer all these when I was still in high school and would not have had to stop to think any of them over. Reminds me of the George Carlin addage: "Think about how dumb the average person is and half of the world is dumber than that!"

The actual dates are less important than the sequence of events and understanding the context of the event. For instance, it doesn't matter whether you think the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 3rd or 4th 1776 or 1777, but it is very important to know that the Revolutionary War predated the Civil War by just under a hundred years, and to understand why it took just under a hundred years to get to the Civil War when those issues had been simmering since before the counrty was founded. Whose signature is the largest on the Declaration of Independence is interesting, and the story behind it is fun, but it is irrelevant by historical standards. It means nothing to memorize the date the Constitution was ratified but it means everything to know that the Constitution didn't come into effect until it was ratified by the states some ten years after the Revolutionary war was won, and that the Articles of Confederation were in place until then.
