Extremely happy with State Farm. All our policies (cars + home + umbrella) with them.
We've had two recent claims (not our fault), they were flawless. In particular, they don't make you go to "Their" repair shops - use anyone you want.

I've been with State Farm since High School - so that's 24 years now. I can't compare against other firms as SF is all I know. SF has never let me down and during a rash of bad luck that included 2 claims on Homeowners, a totalled Land Rover Disco, and a vandalized truck, all within 2 years, they never raised my rates and were very quick with a compensation check.
An old boss once advised me, "Protect yourself from the things that can break you". SF holds our auto, home, and partial life policies and I couldn't be happier. |

Let me elaborate: Some bozo broke the window on my Mini and stole my GPS. I wanted it fixed at the mini dealer, not glass o matic. When I called in the morning, they said I could have it fixed wherever I wanted, asked me to send the original receipt for the GPS, they almost immediately repaid the repair and original purchase price for the GPS.

Have State Farm for business and personal (auto, home-owners) insurance. Had only one claim about 5-10 years ago after running over a huge block of ice which was spit out from behind a truck, and destroying a custom aluminum wheel. They payed to have a new wheel made. Would rate them highly in my experience.

I'm mixed, once they told my mother in-law to rebuild (out of pocket) her fence that went down during a storm or they'd drop her. She had no other claims. On the otherside, SF handled me very well when my bicycle got snagged, I got the check the next day. PD did find the bike the day after and I returned the check but SF were great.

I've been with State Farm for years. I have glass coverage and have had several windshields replaced... never an issue.

I've been with State Farm since 1974. Never a problem. Right now have 2 trucks, 1 van, 1 boat and the wife's G35 insured by them.
(Although our Porsches and Corvairs are insured by American Collectors)

My Audi was rear ended whith my father inlaw at the wheel. State Farm was awesome, went to a really good 1 stop shop where the shop was the adjuster as well, had the car back as good as new in no time.
6 months later, Wife turns too hard at gas station and hit bollard (conc filled metal pole to protect pumps from drivers like my wife) with the rear passanger door. Take the Audi back to the same shop, suddenly they are no longer an approved shop w/ State Farm, I get in the middle of a pissing match between State Farm and the Shop, State Farms rep turns into a total A-hole and wants the absolute min done to fix car, shop argues car will not look right and I authorize it to be fixed correctly. I fight with State Farm to no satisfaction. I end up paying an additional $1200 out of pocket on top of the deductable. 6 months later, Wife hits a curb with the Audi (she has now been banned from driving it until she goes to a driving school of my choice) bends front fender, rips belly pad and damages front bumper. I take it to a State Farm approved shop and it is the crapiest repair I have ever seen, overspray on the entire car. Front fender on crooked, healdlights on crooked, one of the front headlight sprayers fell off while driving. My homeowenrs insurance here in Florida ia with State Farm and discussed in another thread. They just doubled my already doubled homeowners insurance. I went from $1400 a year to $3300 to a new high of $6500 over a 2 year span.

With SF for house and cars for a dozen years, the bikes for a couple. Have never filed a claim, no experience in that area. I go for high deductible (insurance curmudgeon). Their rates are in line or I'd be somewhere else, not too big a hit when my son turned 16 and was added.

I have State Farm for all vehicles + my house. No other company can even come close to their low rates ($400/year on my 911 with full coverage). The only claims I have ever filed have been on my homeowner's policy and they handled it very well.
They do explicitly exclude any sort of coverage for use of the vehicle on the track, though.

I've been happy with State Farm. Been with my agent since I bought a '69 Corvette when I was 21 and nobody else would touch me.
My only claim has been a fire at a rental property caused by a tennant. State farm paid in full, quickly, no problems. Two units were gutted, the adjoining two had smoke damage. State Farm paid the rent for all four apartments every month while they were being rebuilt. |

I have SF on all of my vehicles and have been with them since 1984. This is probably true with every company, but my experience has taught me that you need an agent whom you like to work with and who likes to work with you.
The agent that had my accounts back in the late 80's tried to lowball me on a truck that was totalled (other driver had no insurance, so my insurance had to pay). The agent screwed with me, drug out my claim, and generally pissed me off. I moved my accounts to a different agent (next town over) and have never had a problem since. In September 2003 my truck was hit by a deer... $3k worth of damage that SF paid without complaint. Three months later a drunk driver ran a light and t-boned the truck. He decided to have his company fight me about it so SF paid for all repairs and then went after the guy themselves. They let me choose any shop I want, but if I use their approved shops they will guarantee the work for 5 years. Plus, they offer agreed value coverage on my classic auto.

I had a car hit by a driver insured by state farm, they took reasonable care of things. I was more impressed by Geico though when my '85 was totaled by one of their insured.

When I lived in Colorado, had a girl friend total 3 of my vehicles within a 6 month period! State Farm didn't raise my rates and went above and beyond to replace the vehicles! I wouldn't dream of leaving them!

I had SF for almost 25 years. Had one car stolen, and my wife's car was totaled when she was hit on the freeway by a pickup that kept on going. They did a great job on the settlements.
I had auto, home, and apartments insured by them. However I changed to Ameriprize (American Express) through Costco for the car insurance. SF kept raising my premiums yearly until I was paying $2K per year with good driving records, no at fault accidents, and a senior discount for me. I'm back down to $1,200 yearly with the same coverage. Can't comment on the Ameriprize service since I haven't made any claims. I thought SF was raising my rates because they were putting the burden of their payouts for hurricanes, fires, investment losses during 2001, etc. on their rate payers. Currently they won't even insure homes in the foothills & mountains to the east of here where I'm building my new home because of exposure to fire danger. I had to buy course of contruction and liability insurance from Farmers.

I'm with SF, have been for years with an agent in your neck of the woods. His name is Paul Kagan, and he helped me get out of a real jam after the Northridge quake. Good guy to deal with.

Allow me to differ. Two of the worst insurance experiences of my life were with State Farm. I will never, ever use them again. I won't go into details (they're long stories) but when I appealed to my agent and the company headquarters for help I got nowhere. Only after appealing to a local TV reporter and having the situation described on the air and in a magazine (Changing Times- not even sure if it still exists) did they grudgingly do what they should have done in the first place- which was actually cover one of the incidents and pay for OEM parts and the dimunition of value. Then, of course, they cancelled us- even though the accidents weren't our fault. I found better coverage for less anyway.

Wayne, I have SF for home/autos and no claims history. In the last 10 years I've had two rate adjustments upwards due to fires in the pacific northwest and more recently adjustments for investment losses. For the first time in 40years of paying auto insurance I got a small check due to a rare downward adjustment. That surprised the heck out of me. There seems to be coverage adjustments each year too. For example, when the state legislature ups coverage limits for uninsured motorist; or if one of your vehicles has a higher risk factor, like my S2000 just recently. The 911 has never been a problem though.

Not to hijack this thread, but I currently have Hagerty Ins. and have been very happy with them but I'm looking for insurance for my 911 without the "usage restrictions" that Sneed and Hagerty both have. Would State Farm be a good choice for my Porsche (it's a '74 911)? Thanks!
