I'll buy the new one if it has GPS and an iChat app. DONE.

That's a nice notion, RB, but all those physical changes you want sure would add a lot of moving (breakable) parts. And it might just be the size of my laptop when you're done with it.

I guess the new update localizes your position by triangulation from cell towers, not GPS. Not sure how accurate that is or what aquisiition time will be like.

My wife never answers my calls either, but her phone is plenty loud. There may be other issues... :)

What will it need to make you switch?

For me:

2 keyboards. A slide out thumb-board in portrait mode and tilt like keyboard for landscape mode.

Make sure it will connect with Blackberry services, make sure it will work directly with MS active-sync. Open it up for third parties to develop software. Have it come out of the box with the ability to open and manipulate word, excel, power point. It should be able to read PDF files.

Add a thumbwheel for scrolling through messages (like the blackberries) and you will have a device that will appeal to anyone. And yes, if it was like the above and offered GSM, and not locked to a Network, I'd buy one.

a slide out keyboard and thumbwheel will never happen. Not needed, and totally flies in the face of the UI.

3rd party SDK comes out in Feb. It can read word/excel/powerpoint and pdf already. Manipulate? Does anyone edit office docs on a handheld? I tried once or twice...miserable experience. As for exchange and blackberry support, that'll likely get sorted.

Real dissappointed they didn't announce the Canadian (red-headed stepchild) launch. I heard sometime this year, but who knows. I don't care about the MS features, I just want a phone that always works, mail/text/WiFi work flawlessly. Tunes/Movies/Etc are just gravy for me, so this price is a little high for just the phone component but I saw a buddies, and I WANT ONE NOW!

Either Steve Jobs puts the Rogers Music store on the Iphone or Ted Rogers puts Itunes on his network. Both are stubborn so even if it did make business sense I doubt you will ever see the IPhone on Rogers or Fido networks.

Dave: To send a picture, first go to the picture on your iPhone; then click the icon in the lower left corner (a box with an arrow coming out of it) then you will be given a few choices - pick "email photo".

To send an SMS to multiple recipients, goto the SMS/Text app, click the new text message button in the upper, right corner (square w/ a pencil in it) and hit the "+" button to add recipients; keep hitting "+" to add each new person . . .

Best,

Kurt

Those are the three reasons why I don't have one now (mainly the bottom two). I need a phone that will work like a phone should work. The iPhone's actual phone part is missing features that are commonplace on other phones (like the Razr, which I don't like, but it's loud, and alerts me when I have mail or a voicemail message).

My wife's iPhone - she never picks it up because she can't hear it - very annoying. She loves it, but I want to run it over with my truck when I call her *all the time* and she never answers the phone. This isn't once and a while either, it's about 80-90% of the time. With her old Razr, she heard it all the time.

Well when you switch I will buy your old one! :D
I hope they unlock them after the 2 years of AT&T, otherwise I may end up hacking one.

3g access, see qualcom chip embargo, why would apple ship a phone that they would not have been able to sell

Vmail reminder, that's a pref not a feature, personnaly I hate it

I hear mine ring with no issues, pick a ringtine that does. Not blend with ambient noise. I have kids, anything melodic gets lost around their tv shows, toys etc. You need something obnoxious

legion 01-23-2008 07:21 AM

Sometimes I think Apple could slap their logo on a turd and sell it for $700.

They tried that and it didn't work. :D

Newton and Mac Cube come to mind, among many others.

True, but I was thinking more in the last 3-4 years.

Dave:

AFAIK, you can't send a picture to a phone number like a text message, but most phones have an email address that is often the phone number followed by the provider's domain like, 1115551234@tmobile.com. You gotta have that email address until Apple allows pics to be sent via SMS.

FWIW.

Best,

Kurt

How about Apple TV? It's been a turd so far, but may start selling now that Apple has movie rental deals with all of the studios.

Best,

Kurt

Go to Settings > Mail > Auto-Check and set your preference!
